Afrobeats star MohBad has died aged 27.

The news was confirmed in a statement posted on the Nigerian singer’s Instagram, in which his family asked for privacy.

In the statement, MohBad, real name Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, was described as a ‘light to the very end’ and said to be ‘finally at peace’.

It read: ‘It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Promise Oladimeji Aloba PK/A Mohbad (Imole) today, the 12th of September, 2023.

‘Mohbad was light until the very end, and as we mourn the loss of the brightness he carried, the family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time. Imole is finally at peace.’

The talented star’s cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

MohBad, born in 1998, was signed to Marlian Records until 2022 when he left the label.

MohBad’s promoter Ovie also confirmed the news in a statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, that read: ‘Confirmed. Mohbad is dead. Sad, sad day. R.I.P.’

Ovie added: ‘It’s important to apply wisdom and caution when it comes to Mohbad’s demise. I’m already seeing some wild tweets. Do not make ridiculous insinuations. Be very careful.’

MohBad is best known for songs Peace, Pariwo and Ask About Me.

Joey Akan, the founder of Afrobeats Intelligence, added on X: ‘Last time I saw Mohbad, we were in an apartment, a recording camp working on song selection for his last EP.

‘Man gave me a weird sweet red wine, and we had a little good-natured argument over the final songs to make the project and the length of the EP. Rest in peace man.’

Fans rushed to social media to mourn the loss of MohBad.

One person wrote: ‘A musical soul taken too soon. Rest in peace, Mohbad,’ while another added, ‘This one hurts real bad.’

Other tweets included: ‘Mohbad’s sudden death is heartbreaking’ and ‘Rest in perfect peace Mohbad.’
