One flavour is making a comeback (Picture: REX / Getty)

If you love tucking into Quality Street at Christmas, you’ll find a new addition within the colourful selection this year.

That’s because, after more than two decades, the chocolatier is bringing back a previously discontinued flavour.

Following a 20-year hiatus, you’ll find the coffee creme flavour in Quality Street’s festive cracker (£6) and advent calendar (£10) this year – both available at Waitrose and John Lewis during the build up to Christmas.

Shoppers will also be able to sample the coffee creme flavour in pick ‘n’ mix tins, available at selected John Lewis branches.

There’s also the option to ‘fill your own’ advent calendar for £14, should you wish to exclusively stock up on the new comeback choc.

However, fans won’t find the returning flavour in the usual Quality Street tubs.

What’s your favourite Quality Street flavour?Comment Now

Quality Street brand manager, Samantha Hirst said: ‘We’ve been keeping the exciting news of the return of the Coffee Creme tightly under wraps so it’s a huge relief to finally share it with Quality Street fans across the UK.

‘We know it was the one that fans were keen to bring back when we asked the nation back in 2021, so it’s safe to say that we’re anticipating we’ll see some smiling faces at the news.’

The news comes after Quality Street announced the return of a discontinued chocolate last year, the Honeycomb Crunch, which was previously axed in 2018.

Nutella pancakes
Calling anyone with a sweet tooth (Picture: TikTok)

Who doesn’t love a bit of chocolatey goodness every once in a while?

If you’re in search of your next cocoa fix then TikTok has you covered with an insanely delicious-looking Nutella pancake recipe.

The pancakes, made tastefully by Archersfood, have amassed a staggering 74 million views and 7.5 million likes so far.

With nearly 60,000 comments begging for the recipe, we thought we’d bring it to you, so you can indulge in the fluffy chocolate treat.

According to Maia and Noemi Archer, who are the masterminds behind these intensely gooey pancakes, the first step is to freeze your Nutella 30 minutes before cooking your pancakes.

Freezing the Nutella means it’s easier to handle and not that messy, you will be able to grab it with your hands and place it in the middle of the Nutella pancake without any trouble.

If you don’t have time to freeze the Nutella before cooking, that’s fine, it just might be a little stickier.

While there’s no denying you might get full after the first few bites, we can’t say we aren’t salivating at the thought of it.

So without further ado, here is what you need and how to whip them up.

Ingredients:

  • Two eggs
  • 110 g granulated sugar
  • 250 ml whole fat cow milk
  • Three tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 270 g all purpose flour
  • 30 g cocoa powder
  • Two teaspoons baking powder
  • 100 g Nutella

1. Firstly, crack and whisk the two eggs in a bowl. Then, pour the sugar into the bowl while you whisk the eggs to make sure it’s thoroughly mixed.

2. Pour in your oil and milk, then add your sifted flour and baking powder into the batter. Mix it all up with the help of a whisk and if it’s looking a tad lumpy, feel free to blend the batter until smooth.

3. Place a non-stick pan over a low heat and add a couple of drops of oil. Maia and Noemi recommend spreading the oil with a paper towel to evenly coat the pan. When your pan is warm (not too hot) add some of your pancake batter, cover the pan with a lid and cook it for one minute on low heat.

4. After a minute, add your frozen Nutella on top of the cooked batter. Then add another spoonful of batter to the pan, only to cover the Nutella and cover it with a lid again. When the batter on top starts to bubble but isn’t cooked, it’s time to flip.

5. Then make sure the pancake is cooked on the underside and remove it from the heat. Repeat the whole process with as many pancakes as the batter will make.

6. Lastly, feel free to drizzle as much Nutella as you can handle on top before chowing down.

A mum has been praised for insisting that her son cooks family dinner once a week.

The mum-of-two, who posted on Reddit, said that while her eldest son, 17, has taken an interest in cooking and makes dinner for the family up to three times a week of his own accord, her youngest, James, 15, couldn’t be less interested.

So much so that he asks his older brother to make him a snack every single day, despite being able to make sandwiches and other simple meals on his own, simply because he thinks his brother is better at it.

‘I felt this was a sign I had dropped the ball so I decided that James would take over making the family dinner once a week,’ she wrote.

‘It didn’t have to be fancy but it had to be at least somewhat balanced and filling.

‘I help him with the meal planning and then I would work at the dining room table nearby in case he needed help.’

Reddit users praised the mum for teaching her child a vital life skill.

‘This is an important life skill not enough people have and knowing how to do these things will allow him to put together cheap, healthy meals when he’s living on his own instead of wasting his little money on DoorDash,’ wrote one user.

Another said they wished more parents would teach their children how to cook.

‘One day he’ll thank you,’ wrote another.

Top tips for cooking with your kids

Despite being an important skill, cooking with your kids can be draining, messy and stressful, to say the least. Thankfully, Mandy Mazliah, a vegetarian mum-of-three whose kids don’t eat vegetables, previously shared with us some top tips for cooking with your kids.

1. Pick your recipe carefully. Start simple and make something that YOU are confident in making.

2. Saying that though, kids love being involved in meal planning and they’re more likely to want to help if they’ve chosen what to make.

3. Pick the right time – make sure no-one’s too hungry or tired – including yourself! I like to make myself a coffee BEFORE we start.

4. It doesn’t have to be a major event – you could just ask your child to stir some ingredients together or peel a few potatoes before a meal.

5. Teach them about food hygiene too. Hand washing is essential before starting. It’s also important to wash hands in between touching raw foods and cooked foods – especially if meat is involved.

6. Most importantly, relax. It’ll take ages, there will be eggshells in the cake batter, potato peelings on the floor and every utensil in the house will be dirty.

As the nation marks one year since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, you may be looking for a way to pay homage to the much-loved monarch.

And what better way to toast her Majesty than sipping on her favourite cocktail?

The Dubonnet was widely reported as her drink of choice, with the late Queen said to enjoy the signature cocktail before lunch.

It was previously a favourite of the Queen Mother, who once remarked ahead of an outing: ‘I think that I will take two small bottles of Dubonnet and gin with me this morning, in case it is needed.’

The French aperitif is a blend of fortified wine, herbs, and spices, made by Pernod Ricard with an alcohol content of 14.8%.

Elizabeth II was known to prefer a cocktail of two parts Dubonnet to one part gin, garnished with a wedge of lemon and two ice cubes (or one large ice cube).

Its construction is deceptively simple, as the aromatised spirit has complex notes of grapes, blackcurrant, and tannins from cinchona bark, nicely offset by the tartness of the gin.

Get your cocktail shaker out and raise a glass (Picture: Dubonnet)

In 2009, at an event at Lords Cricket ground, the monarch was dismayed to find the drinks cabinet bare of her favourite beverage, sending her butler out to fetch more so she could enjoy a sip throughout the day.

In fact, the Queen loved it so much that she gave Dubonnet a Royal Warrant in November 2021 – an official seal of approval if ever there was one.

If you want to recreate the iconic cocktail, here’s how to make it at home.

Ingredients

  • 60ml Dubonnet
  • 30ml gin
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon for garnish

Method

  1. Put a cocktail shaker in the freezer for around an hour to chill.
  2. Pour your Dubonnet and gin into the shaker, stirring with a bar spoon until the mixture is also fully chilled.
  3. Add two ice cubes and a lemon wedge to a rocks glass, before straining the contents of the shaker over the top.
  4. Serve and enjoy.

How to toast the Queen

If you want to accompany your drink with a toast for the Queen, you can raise a glass while taking inspiration from the following famous tributes sent her way:

‘Ladies and gentlemen, will you please rise with me and drink a Toast to the Queen.’ – Dwight D. Eisenhower

‘On behalf of us all, I wanted to pay my own tribute to your lifetime of selfless service.’ – King Charles III.

‘In the words of Shakespeare, “To this blessed plot, this Earth, this realm, this England.” To the Queen.’ – Barack Obama.

‘Our hearts are broken, but even though we grieve we will remember the rich legacy of love, hope and acceptance that you have left for all of us.

‘We will miss you and we will remember you for years to come. So as we raise our glasses and toast Her Majesty, this time we say god take care of our Queen.’ – Jackie ‘O’ Henderson.

‘We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility.’ – Helen Mirren.

‘Dignified, humble, wise, stoic, and dedicated to duty and service to the country she loved. Thank you for everything, Ma’am. We will be forever indebted to you.’ – Piers Morgan.

‘There is nothing more noble than to devote your life to the service of others. We stand with the people of the UK and Commonwealth in honouring the life and dedication to duty of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. May she rest in peace.’ – Tim Cook.

How dark do you go? Brits divided on the correct shade of tea
The cuppa wars continue (Picture: Getty)

Nothing divides the nation quite like the humble cuppa, and it seems the debate over the ‘right’ way to make one is still waging on.

A post by Very British Problems on X (formerly known as Twitter) has started a fresh argument about the perfect brew – and people’s opinions are as strong as their teas.

Thousands of the account’s 3.9 million followers shared their views on a chart of 44 cups of tea of varying shades.

Each of the drinks showed a different milk-to-tea ratio, with A1 being the lightest – almost all milk – and F6 coming in darkest – black tea without a drop of dairy.

‘The correct choice is E3,’ read the tweet’s caption. ‘I trust there’ll be no further discussion on the matter.’

But of course, it was only the beginning.

‘Anyone that says A1 should be be medically examined and then publicly shamed,’ joked one commenter, while another added: ‘Pretty sure my toddler drinks A1’.

Another person shared their disdain for milky brews, saying: ‘Saw a B1 on someone’s desk yesterday. I just told him I was disappointed with him and walked away.’

Yet it wasn’t all milk hate, as one person said ‘I have my tea at a lovely B2. Love a milky cuppa,’ and another chimed in: ‘E3? Why not just have a cup of sump oil? B2 is the answer. It’s tea. It’s supposed to be bland.’

A third replied, ‘the correct colour is the colour of He-man,’ referencing the bronzed superhero from the Masters of the Universe franchise.

What’s your ideal shade of tea? Share your preference below!Comment Now

It’s almost impossible to find consensus on such a subjective issue, but the majority of responses seemed to favour those on the A6 to F1 axis and the cups in its vicinity.

‘E2 is the objectively correct choice that doesn’t just taste like tannin,’ said one tea-lover, alongside another who added, ‘D4 for me,’ and a third who said: ’Im more of a C5 person to be honest.’

Despite the fact Brits apparently now prefer coffee to tea, it’s a beverage that still has the power to bring us to boiling point.

Last year, a milky brew was called a ‘criminal offence’ and likened to ‘dishwater,’ ‘paint brush rinse water’, and ‘bath water’ by outraged social media users.

Given 45% of people in the UK say that a proper cup of tea makes them proud to be British, it’s understandable we all have different definitions of what that looks like.

Just don’t get us started on whether it’s acceptable to put the milk in first, though, at least unless you want to start a scrap.

(Picture: Colourscape Music Festival, Mind of Moriarty, Dans Le Noir and Gaucho)

Welcome back to the Slice, your weekly guide to what’s on in London.

We like to challenge ourselves. This week, we’re taking on a criminal mastermind, dining in pitch darkness and venturing into a colourful soundscape. All in a weekend’s work…

The Slice’s Pick

Mind of Moriarty

Andrew Scott as Moriarty in Sherlock.
Find your inner Sherlock in this dastardly new immersive escape room (Picture: Mind of Moriarty)

Those who watched BBC Sherlock will remember the devious Moriarty, the diabolical (and devilishly handsome – Hot Priest from Fleabag, anybody?) criminal mastermind intent on destroying Holmes. At this immersive escape room experience, he’s back – well, sort of. You’ve been roped in as a recruit of Mycroft (Sherlock’s big brother AKA The British Government) to take down an evil AI that’s somehow had Moriarty’s twisted mind uploaded into it. Yikes. Rock up to Shepherd’s Bush’s nondescript West12 shopping centre and ring the bell for your ‘eye appointment’ at Doyle’s Opticians (wink wink) to be inducted into a daring mission to take down the dastardly mainframe. On a whistle-stop tour through the series’ most iconic sets and moments (including 221B’s living room), you’ll have to solve each room through quick thinking, laser dodging and good old-fashioned detective work. You have one hour – time to go to your mind palace…

Tickets from £40, W12 Shopping Centre, Shepherd’s Bush.

Food & Drink

Dans le Noir

Two people dining in the dark.
A uniquely sensory dining experience (Picture: Dans le Noir)

Dining in the dark might sound gimmicky, but as soon as you enter Dans Le Noir you realise there’s nothing else quite like it out there – no wonder the restaurant has remained eternally popular. And when they say ‘dark’, they mean pitch black. Upon arriving, you’re guided into the Farringdon dining room by a staff member who is themselves blind or partially sighted.

Once seated, senses shift: noise becomes louder, smells stronger, and bizarrely, taste less clear. I could accurately smell my main course, but I incorrectly guessed my starter, showing just how much we eat with our eyes. Dans Le Noir offers a unique, theatrical and memorable meal out, as well as affording a new appreciation for the difficulties faced by partially sighted people in a noisy, busy city like London.

Back in the fully lit bar, you’ll find out what you dined on, and with a menu (which can be tailored for allergens and dietary requirements) that changes every three to four months, it will certainly be a welcome surprise.

Set menus from £52, 69-73 St John Street, Farringdon.

Gaucho

A Ceviche dish from Gaucho
Keep summer alive with Ceviche and wine tasting (Picture: Gaucho)

Keep summer alive while the sun’s still out this September with this tasty Ceviche and Wine Tasting. Gaucho has teamed up with Argentinian winery El Esteco to offer a unique masterclass. Enjoy three, fresh ceviche plates with delicious summer whites and roses on the terrace, and learn all about the history and heritage of this South American dish from Gaucho’s own sommelier. Guests can also stay on to treat themselves to dinner and get 25% off their meal if you fancy a sumptuous steak afterwards. With two dates available, space is limited. So make sure you book your tasting right away!

Tickets from £25 per person, 13 Sep at Gaucho Sloane Avenue or 28 Sep at Gaucho Piccadilly

Wineyard

A new wine market and family-friendly entertainment (Picture: Wineyard London)

In my book, lazy Sundays are best spent with a glass of vino in hand. Turns out grape minds think alike (sorry!), as a new independent wine market opens in Round Chapel, Clapton this weekend. With 12 wine stands and hundreds of bottles on offer, Wineyard invites you to sip, slurp and shop between 12pm – 7pm. Your ticket includes an exclusive tote bag, complete with GoVino glass and five tasting tokens so you can start sampling some of the fantastic wines on offer. There’s also beers on tap, alcohol-free craft drinks from Punchy, family-friendly entertainment and wine masterclasses where you can learn everything from tasting tips to how to start your own urban winery.

Tickets from £15, 10 September, Clapton.

Caissi Levy in the play Next To Normal
The Tony-winning musical arrives in London (Picture: Next To Normal, Marc Brenner)

This Pulitzer-winning 2008 musical won a Tony for Tom Kitt’s music and much praise for shattering the stigma surrounding mental health. This UK debut stars Broadway’s superb Caissie Levy – Frozen’s original Elsa, no less – as middle-aged mother Diana who we first meet teetering on the edge of a bipolar relapse. Yet instead of illuminating the biological, chemical and psychological causes of the condition, Brian Yorkey (book and lyrics) turns to the go-to trauma for writers in search of a tragedy – the dead baby.

Tickets from £12, until 7 October, Donmar Warehouse. Daily tickets available 7 days before performances at 10am online, returned tickets released as they become available.

We all owe Londoner Alan Evans a pint, as he’s gone to the effort of mapping out all of London’s pub quizzes.

The city has 517 going, and you can see his map here.

Alan Evans said: ‘There are currently 517 venues listed, and all of these are open to the public, as I didn’t include any quizzes held at private clubs.

‘Inevitably the list will be incomplete as new quizzes are starting all the time, but I was as exhaustive as I could be.

‘Where possible, the map includes start time, cost of entry, prize, and if relevant which of the big quiz companies’ questions it uses. You can also sort it by days of the week.’

Alan’s map is free to use and will help you find your new favourite pub quiz.

As expected, there are very few on Fridays and Saturdays, with London only having one quiz on Saturdays at The Graduate in Grenwich.

On other days of the week however, there’s plenty of choice.

We’ve got them all listed here too – is your local on here?

And if you’re on the hunt for a pub quiz with a difference, look out for one special listing.

The Barley Mow in Marylebone,] sometimes has A-Lister hosts, from Judi Dench, Michael Sheen, Hugh Bonneville and Bryan Cranston.

Maybe you’ll be there for the next star-studded night.

Are you a McWinner? How to redeem your McDonald’s Monopoly codes from instant win to double peel https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/06/mcdonalds-monopoly-how-to-redeem-codes-19455632/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/06/mcdonalds-monopoly-how-to-redeem-codes-19455632/#respond Wed, 06 Sep 2023 10:52:20 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19455632

Are you loving the fact that Monopoly is back?(Picture: Tim Boyle/Getty Images)

Talk about a Happy Meal – the beloved McDonald’s Monopoly prize giveaway is back, giving customers the chance to win big with their Big Mac order.

McDonald’s Monopoly gives customers the chance to win a number of prizes, from gift vouchers to holidays and even £100,000 in cash – that’ll get you a lot of McNuggets.

Customers collect game pieces when they buy qualifying McDonald’s products – you’ll be able to find them as stickers which appear on the packaging of your food.

But after you’ve sat down with your favourite order from the menu and got your code, where can you actually redeem your prize should you indeed be a McWinner?

Here are all the tasty details…

How to redeem your McDonald’s Monopoly code

How you redeem your prize depends on which category your prize falls into: Instant win, collect to win or digital peel.

The general rule is:

  • Instant Win food prizes can be claimed in-store or via the MyMcDonald’s app
  • Non-food instant win prizes can be claimed via the app
  • Collect to win prizes must be claimed via the app
  • Digital peel prizes must be claimed via the app

You might think Mozzarella sticks are a prize in and of themselves (Picture: McDonald’s)

Instant win prizes

Instant Win prizes can be redeemed at any McDonald’s branch by handing the token over at the counter when ordering.

You can also cash these pieces in on the touch screen kiosks found in many stores and the McDonald’s app by entering the 12-digit code.

If you have won free food in the online game you’ll get a unique QR code, along with a 12-digit code you can scan or enter at the kiosk or via the app.

For Instant Win non-food prizes, you can claim your prize via the MyMcDonalds app. Some of the prizes are discount vouchers, and the game piece itself will include instructions on how to redeem.

Depending on the prize, there may be some extra terms and conditions about when or how you need to claim.

Collect to win prizes

For collect To win prizes, you must first collect a full colour set. On each piece, it will tell you which other pieces you need to complete a set.

If it is a food prize, then similarly you can redeem the prize at either a McDonald’s restaurant or via the app.

if you collect the set for a non food prize in your Monopoly Wallet in the My McDonalds app, you should follow the instructions in the app about how to claim your prize.

You will be asked for more information along with the redeem code, and will need to complete the online form by November 14 2023 in order rot claim your prize.

Double peel prizes

The app also includes a double-peel feature that lets you peel an extra virtual sticker whenever you bank a property from the original one.

Each sticker has a chance to win and online prizes are given to two people every minute.

If you win a cash prize online, you’ll be presented with an online claim form where you can enter your details. You can choose to have a bank transfer or to receive a prepaid card in the post.

If it’s a different prize, simply fill in the claim form online. You’ll then receive an email with a voucher that you can use to redeem your prize.

If you win a McDonald’s food prize online, your prize voucher will be sent to your McDonald’s Wallet on the McDonald’s app.

Wine expert hails £6.99 Aldi rosé that ‘tastes just like Whispering Angel’ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/05/expert-hails-6-99-aldi-rose-that-tastes-just-like-whispering-angel-19451252/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/05/expert-hails-6-99-aldi-rose-that-tastes-just-like-whispering-angel-19451252/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2023 15:47:54 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19451252
Aldi shoppers go wild for ?7 'heatwave essential' wine that 'tastes like Whispering Angel'
Our late summer saviour? (Picture: Getty/ALDI/Metro.co.uk)

With balmy temperatures and sunny skies out in full force, it’s the perfect opportunity to make the most of the final days of summer with a glass of rosé in your garden or local park.

And if Provençal rosés are your thing, an expert has shared a wallet-friendly one that should be on your radar.

Wine expert Lucy Hitchcock, from Partner In Wine, has shared a bottle available for £6.99 at Aldi that tastes ‘just like Whispering Angel’ – which typically retails for £26.

That’s a £19 saving on the bottle of rosé, which is made with samsó, grenache and syrah grapes.

It’s worth pointing out that this budget-friendly supermarket rosé, called Specially Selected Coteaux De Beziers, is made in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France – which is not in the typical Provence region.

This explains the lower price tag but Lucy stresses that the flavour profile is incredibly similar.

Do you have a wine ‘dupe’ people should know about? Tell us below…Comment Now

Lucy says in her TikTok and Instagram video: ‘I’m getting this really vibrant burst of red berries. I can smell strawberries, and maybe raspberries.

‘Wow. It’s got this amazing crisp acidity that you would expect from a Provence-style rosé.’

This isn’t the only time Lucy has helped us bag a bargain. In fact, she’s made a name for herself for finding cheaper alternatives to luxury drinks.

Last year, she explained that Aldi’s £8.99 bottle of Cremant-du-jura is very similar to Laurent-Perrier – but is around £33 cheaper.

UK pubs
Is your local on the list? (Pictures: Instagram/spreadeaglesw18/natainscough/beautifulboozers/cadoganarmspublichouse)

The humble pub is almost as synonymous with British culture as afternoon tea and the Royal Family.

Whether its soaking up the last of the summer sun in a beer garden or having a meal with family and friends, its likely that a large portion of us can be found whiling away our weekends in our favourite local.

If taking an insta worthy snap of your Sunday roast is a key part of your pub experience – or if you just enjoy the finer things in life- then you may be interested to know which pubs CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) has voted the prettiest in the UK in its Pub Design Awards.

Here’s the full list of winners – including four from the capital.

The Cadogan Arms

This Chelsea gem underwent a hefty renovation in 2021, which restored the pub – which dates back to the early-Georgian era- to its former glory.

Chandeliers hang from an ornate wooden ceiling, while the pub’s exterior is adorned with an abudance of beautiful flower displays.

The venue serves everything from carefully selected beers to exquistely fancy looking cocktails, making it perfect for both casual and special occasions and its food menu celebrates the best of British produce.

The Cadogan Arms won the Refurbishment award at the Pub Design Awards.

Location: 298 King’s Road, Chelsea, London SW3 5UG

The George

The George is a grade II listed building, which has also had an amibitious renovation in recent years.

The pub has kept many of its original features, for example its beautiful Victorian mirrors and striking dark oak panelling.

According to the venue’s website, The George was both a central hub for the political, cultural and social movements of the late 18th century and home to writers and poets in the 20th century.

The pub serves an extensive selection of wines, spirits (with a focus on Irish Whiskey) beer and cocktails, so there’s bound to be something for everyone.

The George was highly commended in the Design Pub Awards refurbishment category.

Location: 55 Great Portland Street,Fitzrovia, London W1W 7LQ

The Black Lion

The Black Lion is another Grade II listed building , with the Kilburn venue dating back to 1898.

The venue’s floor to ceiling ornate wooden panelling is transports you back in time, whilst lanterns suspended from the ceiling give the venue an incredibly cosy feel.

As well as an extensive drinks menu, including a plethora or real ales, The Black Lion also serves North Indian inspired cuisine.

The pub won the Historic England Conservation Award at the Pub Design Awards.

Location: 274 Kilburn High Road, Kilburn, London NW6 2BY

Spread Eagle

The final London pub featured in the awards is Wandsworth establishment Spread Eagle.

This stunning hotel and pub is yet another Grade II listed building which has recently been restored.

Some of the pub’s feature highlights are its ornate Victorian glass bar back, stunning picture galleries and the detailed map of London etched into the bathroom windows.

It has a great selection of beer and ales and serves food made from the finish British ingredients.

Spread Eagle was highly commended in the Historic England Conservation category at the Pub Design Awards.

Location: 69 Wandsworth High Street, Wandsworth, London, SW18 2PT

A whopping 26 new additions are now available in stores (Picture: Getty/Pret)

If you’re hanging onto the last sun of summer, Pret’s autumn menu might be just the thing to get you into the swing of the upcoming season.

From today, you can get your hands on 26 new products in shops across the country, with something comforting for every palate as things get chillier.

The chain’s updated menu focuses on ‘hot food innovation,’ with soups, bakes, hot rolls, toasties and desserts all pairing perfectly with barista-made drinks.

Pret A Manger’s beloved Soup Rota is also back, meaning each day offers a different cosy lunch option.

Twists to favourites include Souper Greens Soup, Butternut and Sage Soup, and Chicken, Red Rice and Greens Broth, while a first-timer – Lasagne Soup – enters the rotation.

This newbie is described as ‘comforting, rich chunky option with ground Italian sausage meat, ditalini pasta and tomatoes with basil, oregano and parsley.’

‘Crispy Diet Coke’ is TikTok’s way to elevate your favourite drink https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/05/try-this-tiktok-recipe-for-a-crispy-diet-coke-19448643/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/05/try-this-tiktok-recipe-for-a-crispy-diet-coke-19448643/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2023 11:22:38 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19448643

Sweet, refreshing, oh-so-delicious.

There are lots of ways to describe a Diet Coke, and while ‘crispy’ might not be the first adjective that springs to mind, we promise you, it makes sense.

TikTok creator and influencer, Kristen, has been sharing her love of ‘mid-day diet coke breaks’ for quite some time now.

The 26-year-old is a WFH-er living in San Francisco, and her ‘day in the life’ videos often feature a break for a cold glass of Diet Coke.

Kristen says it’s all about embracing the simple pleasures in life, and it seems the Diet Coke girlies of TikTok can relate – the hashtag ‘dietcokebreak’ currently has 34.7million views on the platform.

So, with lunchtime fast approaching – and in a heatwave no less – now seems like the perfect time for an icy Diet Coke break – but don’t think it’s simply a case of cracking open a can.

One of Kristen’s most popular ‘recipes’ has 1.4million views – but we warn you, it’s going to take some prep.

‘I have been waiting for upwards of, give or take two weeks, to take this specific exact Diet Coke break, because all my ingredients have had to marinate,’ she begins.

Kristen’s recipe for ‘a perfect, stunning, beautiful, crispy’ Diet Coke, begins with leaving said beverage in the fridge for more than two weeks: ‘the longer it’s been in the fridge, the crispier it will be,’ she advises, adding that minimum fridge time should be no less than two days.

She also explains that she’ll be using a glass straw which is ‘key’, and a frozen glass: ‘This has been in the freezer for… a long time,’ she says.

Next, she adds in ice. ‘Ice is crucial. Doesn’t have to be pebbled, but I prefer pebbled.’

The Diet Coke is then poured in – and this is the part where your mouth will start to water.

Next, she uses a citrus powder – but a fresh slice of lime or lemon works too.

‘Wow, takes my breath away every time,’ she says as she takes a sip.

And we have to hand it to her, somehow, ‘crispy’ is the only way to describe this masterpiece.

Spoons is cutting the price of food and drink – just in time for the hottest day of the year https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/05/spoons-is-slashing-prices-just-in-time-for-the-hottest-day-of-the-year-19447594/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/05/spoons-is-slashing-prices-just-in-time-for-the-hottest-day-of-the-year-19447594/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2023 10:45:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19447594

The UK has finally made a last ditch attempt at summer and now, Wetherspoon is set to make these final sunny days even better, by offering a price slash across food and drink.

The low-cost pub chain will be marking prices down by 7.5% for just one day.

On Thursday, if you spend £10 on food and drinks, it will cost £9.25 instead. In Scotland, the deal will only apply to food and non-alcoholic beverages, due to licensing laws.

And the reason for this offer? Well, it’s down to the politics of chain founder, Tim Martin.

The offer is to mark Tax Equality Day, as Tim believes a permanent VAT reduction will benefit all pubs and restaurants across the UK.

Tim said: ‘The biggest threat to the hospitality industry is the vast disparity in tax treatment among pubs, restaurants and supermarkets.

‘Supermarkets pay zero VAT in respect of food sales, whereas pubs and restaurants pay 20%. This tax benefit allows supermarkets to subsidise the selling price of beer.

‘Pubs have been under fantastic pressure for decades because of the tax disadvantages which they have with supermarkets.

‘It means that the hospitality industry is subsiding supermarkets because of the tax rules.

‘We urge the Chancellor to create tax equality between pubs and supermarkets.’

In the last year, 22 Spoons branches are up for sale or under offer.

Tim believes the prices differences between supermarkets and pubs have meant more drinkers are opting out of going to their local, in a bid to save money.
