The Thursday letters page doesn’t think AAA games on smartphones have much of a future, as one reader admires A Boy And His Blob.

Being direct
Can I just give some praise to Nintendo? They make great games, everybody knows that, but this is about something different. While Sony has turned into an antisocial hermit and Microsoft keeps bending the truth so far it slaps them in the face, Nintendo are just sitting there quietly, releasing great games, doing regular showcases. and allowing previews of their games. There were hands-on previews Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom but I can’t remember the last time there was one for a Sony or Microsoft game.

It shows how topsy-turvy everything has got when Nintendo are the open and communicative one, and the other two are the ones that refuse to properly engage with fans and the press.

I doubt we’ll see the Switch 2 revealed in this week’s Nintendo Direct, but I imagine those rumours about a new Mario Vs. Donkey Kong and a F-Zero 99 game are probably true. They sound like small budget games they could slip in as a surprise at the last minute and that’s great. (Plus, Another Code remasters? Who was asking for those!)

You can bet Sony or Microsoft don’t have anything similar up their sleeves and that’s a shame. You can also bet that Nintendo won’t have to hide behind slickly made trailers to get their games looking good. Although, frankly, their name on the box/download is all I need to know at the moment.

Nintendo rarely lets me down and lately that’s been true of more than just the games.

Exciting day
Funny to hear that the Nintendo Direct rumours were true, again. I remember a time, not so long ago, when there were almost no Nintendo rumours and even when there were they never came true. Now it seems like they’re quite common, I guess because Nintendo are the only ones actually putting out new games at a decent pace? How times have changed, eh?

I’m not hoping for any big announcements on Thursday but I do expect a lot of smaller reveals and probably a few shadow drops – Nintendo seems to quite like those at the moment. Excitement, in other words, which has not been forthcoming at all from Sony this year.

I hope they have a State of Play this year as well but I’m not holding my breath. They are though and if they don’t come up for breath soon they risk doing themselves some serious damage.

No Man’s Starfield
I don’t necessarily want to add to the Starfield beatdown but I have to say that in terms of the space exploration, No Man’s Sky is a much better game. Starfield seems to be trying to copy it to a degree, with all the scanning and mining, but No Man’s Sky has so much more variety and depth and its planets and animals are lot more varied and interesting. Maybe they’re not as realistic – although I’m not sure how anyone could know – but they’re definitely a lot more interesting to explore.

To be honest, considering the budget and number of developers that Bethesda has I’m not really sure how they managed to make a game that was so behind No Man’s Sky, especially in terms of the whole space-to-planet transition.

Surely they should have had the time and money to do everything No Man’s Sky does and then add their role-playing stuff on top. Heck, they probably could’ve bought Hello Games and have them do it, with some pocket change Microsoft left in the sofa. Either that or they should’ve made sure their game couldn’t be compared to it.

Fantasy business
That news about Square Enix does not sound good, I’m not going to lie. $2 billion and a 30% drop in value is not small beans. If Sony really does want to buy them then this is the perfect moment, and if they don’t then I imagine Microsoft does.

Or maybe they already feel that the company is too far gone and not worth the trouble? I’m not sure how big Dragon Quest still is in Japan but it’s never amounted to anything in the West. Final Fantasy is still reasonably big but I feel interest has been waning over the years, with Final Fantasy 7 Remake not being nearly as big as you would’ve thought.

I certainly wasn’t interested in Final Fantasy 16, due to the Game Of Thrones influences and I don’t think I was the only one. Square Enix need to prove they’re still a player and I don’t think even more Final Fantasy is the way.

Paging Jeff Goldblum
It was already pointed out but I don’t see how AAA games on iPhone are ever going to work if they charge full price for them. Nobody’s going to pay that and yet if they are substantially cheaper then console and PC owners are going to have a riot.

It’s kind of a moot point given how expensive the iPhone 15 Pro is but even so, it just seems like a publicity gimmick more than anything else. The number of people that will own that phone, pay something close to £60 to buy a game, and then sit and play it with a Bluetooth controller (surely no one would want to do it on a touchscreen?) must be tiny.

It’s interesting that it can be done, but I’m not sure why you’d really want to.

Speak plainly
Saying Bethesda haven’t done anything since 2011 was a sweeping statement based on my own opinion and not the best choice of words.

But were Fallout 4 and 76 as good as 3? Not for my money they weren’t. 76 had a notoriously bad start, it may well be fixed now but too little too late.

Fallout 4 was a sequel that was ironically inferior to what came before it.

What I should have said is Bethesda have been going downhill since Skyrim in 2011 and if the next Elder Scrolls sees release in 2028, that will be 17 years between the last instalment. So I stand by the gist of my last Inbox letter, the Microsoft buyout wouldn’t have happened in 2011/12 when Bethesda were at the height of their power.

Mr Blobby
I watched a video on A Boy And His Blob, which I never had seen before. Now I know it was remade for the Wii but it really got me thinking how cool this idea would be now in the hands of the right developer.

It made me think of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom in the limitless things you could create with your blob to solve puzzles and traverse a landscape. Are there any other games more recently that have used a similar idea?
Phil

GC: The blob’s shapes weren’t limitless but you’re right, it’s a great game. A remaster of the Wii remake is available on most formats.

Don’t kick yourself
With all the talk on Starfield, I thought I’d write in to put in my twopenn’orth. I have to be honest, but I’m really enjoying it. It might have helped that I haven’t played a Bethesda game since Skyrim (many years ago when it had just been released), so I haven’t really been burnt out on Bethesda.

I finished Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom just in time for Starfield’s release and the change in narrative has been really enjoyable. I must admit I am a science fiction geek, so that obviously helps. Having tried No Man’s Sky (after all the patches) I gave up because there was not enough of a coherent story. I get that the story in Starfield may not be perfect (I’ll have to judge that after I finish it) but the side quests have taken on my own journey, which feels individual.

I have never been the sort of gamer that wants to 100% any game, so with Starfield I am just going with the flow on where the game takes me. I don’t feel the need to visit every barren planet and start mining, but I’m more than happy travelling around if I pick up on an interesting story line and go with it. I have just stumbled on a side quest about terrormorphs, essentially a rip-off of the Alien franchise, and I am really enjoying it. It could possibly be a story in its own right and is surprisingly good for a mere side quest.

Yes, there are bugs, some actually quite funny, and if you just accept that they are there, you can still have an enjoyable experience. I guess if you have a particular interest in this type of genre, then you’ll likely get a kick out of it.

Having re-read your Starfield review again after two days, I’m surprised it wasn’t a 5/10!
Anon

GC: We did consider it, but there’s enough we liked to rate it a little above average.

Here’s an exclusive Switch 2 rumour for you. One of the launch games will be Super m-AR-io Bros. using the already rumoured AR camera to allow you to play AR levels in your own home. I’m a big fan of AR gaming, maybe more so than VR so am excited at the prospect of this.
Mark Matthews

GC: We don’t know if you’re joking but we can totally see Nintendo using that name.

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Onibee, who asks what new games would you like to see released for the Switch 2 in its first 12 months?

Rumours about Nintendo’s next console are gathering pace, with reliable sources claiming it will be roughly as powerful as a PlayStation 4 – or perhaps even more so. There has been some vague talk of new games, such as a new 3D Mario, but nothing substantial, so what would you like to see most in terms of first and third party games?

Try and keep things realistic – Nintendo isn’t going to release all its heavy hitters at the same time – but feel free to imagine your dream launch line-up, as long as it’s also reasonably believable.

The Crew Motorfest – familiar horizons https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/14/the-crew-motorfest-familiar-horizons-19496709/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/14/the-crew-motorfest-familiar-horizons-19496709/#respond Thu, 14 Sep 2023 00:05:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19496709

The Crew Motorfest – off-brand Forza Horizon (Picture: Ubisoft)

GameCentral reviews the third entry in The Crew franchise and an open world racer that borrows an awful lot from Xbox smash Forza Horizon 5.

Film sequels usually, but not always, degrade in quality as the number next to their name goes up. In games it’s generally the opposite. Technology improves, developers learn new tricks, and the industry as a whole finds new ways of making something that used to be only okay into something wonderful.

The arc for The Crew has so far had more in common with film sequels. It’s made by French outfit Ivory Tower, many of whose staff came from Eden Games, the studio behind 2006’s Test Drive Unlimited. That game was, like The Crew Motorfest, an open world racer set on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, making this something of a spiritual sequel.

The Crew 2 was set in a microcosm of the entirety of the US, so this is a tighter and more realistically scaled experience, with races that once again mix cars and bikes with a sprinkling of powerboats and light aircraft. As in earlier games, you can switch vehicles at any time, turning your plane into a car that then plummets from the sky, or indeed changing your car into a boat, which just sits quietly on the tarmac.

Provided you transform in the right substrate, you can undertake specialist plane and boat races, but while they have their own distinct look and feel, their handling models and sense of competition are nowhere near as evolved as those of the game’s cars and bikes, instantly rendering them sideshow curios rather than anything resembling the main event.

That would be driving, with the game’s more than 600 cars making for a visually varied bunch. If you played The Crew 2 you can import your car list and drive them straight away, although there’s not really much need to, given that almost all events force you to use a predefined loan car anyway, making the collection in your garage only really useful for driving around the island and engaging in multiplayer races.

Those come in one flavour only. Taking place over three separate events, each of which uses a different car from your collection, you start with a field of 20 players. Races are cross-play, so PC gamers can race those on console, and while PvP cars can’t be modded, you’re at liberty to choose the fastest you own in each of the three racing categories.

Perhaps Motorfest’s biggest surprise is that it abandons the last two games’ theme of racing point-to-point across a large landmass in favour of copying every single thing that the Forza Horizon franchise does. On the one hand, if you’re going to rip anyone off, it may as well be the king of your genre, which Forza Horizon 5 fairly unambiguously is. On the other, when you’re trying to be like something that’s already so close to perfection, you tend to find that the only way is down.

Framing itself as a festival of car culture, its graffiti strewn, EDM-suffused presentation is so similar to Forza’s we’re surprised there hasn’t been a copyright issue. They’ve even somehow managed to make Oahu look a lot like Forza Horizon 5’s miniature Mexico, its beaches, mountains, and green fields all appearing eerily familiar.

Motorfest’s announcers also have a problem: they just never shut up. They keep interrupting races to tell you how mind-blowing the scenery is – the volcanoes! The beaches! – until you just wish they’d let you experience it for yourself. Like someone at the office telling you how hilarious they are, if you feel the need to say it out loud, it’s almost certainly not true, and the game’s continual, needy reminders that it’s exciting and beautiful just makes it sound desperate.

The vehicle handling model has been improved a little since The Crew 2, which had an unabashed arcade style. Motorfest stops shy of anything resembling a simulation, but its cars and bikes at least lean further towards realism, their drifts and cornering physics proving to be somewhat less fantastical than the game’s predecessors.

That still leaves them feeling undistinguished though. Yes, you can spot the difference between driving an American muscle car and a Lamborghini, but most cars feel about as differentiated as branches of Starbucks, their handling clean and predictable, but lacking any sort of character. The bikes are worse, turning in a performance that might charitably be described as vanilla.

Aping Forza’s semi-pornographic approach to automotive photography, panning longingly along cars’ curves in extreme close-up, it also nicks the endless stream of bonus XP. ‘+10 Near Miss’, says the game every time a car goes past in the opposite lane, despite you having been nowhere near it, both of you staying well inside your own sides of the median. The over-enthusiastic accolades are rendered meaningless and annoying.

While Forza Horizon gets away with being an open world game through its sheer panache and the range of micro-activities available on its motorways and side roads, in Motorfest it comes across as tedious padding. Having to drive 20km on dull, lightly curving roads to get to the next race does not feel like time well spent.

The Crew Motorfest screenshot
The Crew Motorfest – who knew Hawaii looked so much like Mexico (Picture: Ubisoft)

Motorfest does have a couple of good ideas though. For one, its GPS-based directional line, guiding you to the next event, hovers three metres above the road surface, making it much easier to anticipate upcoming bends. Its playlists are also quite cool, bringing together a set of races around a theme. That can be electric cars, Japanese street racing, vintage, or a variety of other ways of dividing the automotive kingdom.

Unfortunately, though, what emerges is a middling racing game that’s been stuffed to the brim with filler. Despite all the driving around between races, inane voiceovers, over-the-top decorations, and bonuses for doing literally everything/nothing, it doesn’t distract you from the fact that the handling model is nowhere near as nuanced as that of its leading competitors.

If you’re a PlayStation owner who, for some masochistic reason, feels starved of racing games where you have to spend half your time travelling between events, then this is apparently what you’ve been waiting for. It may look, sound, and play like a Tesco Value Range Forza Horizon 5, but since the real thing is never coming to a Sony console you may feel it’s better than nothing.

For everyone else, it’s a tough game to recommend. There are moments of fun to be had, albeit only driving cars rather than the distinctly lacklustre boats and planes, and even then only in races rather than the endless tarmac of Oahu. But those moments are buried under a mountain of feeble, superfluous content.

The Crew Motorfest review summary

In Short: A pub band cover version of Forza Horizon 5, that despite a few unique ideas doesn’t come close to the fun and variety of its inspiration.

Pros: 600+ cars and Oahu offers some nice backdrops to races. GPS direction finding works well and cross-play means multiplayer races are well populated.

Cons: Car handling model is bland, while powerboats and planes feel like half-hearted bolt-ons. Very few ideas of its own and the open world sections are shameless padding.

Chris Sutton has hit out at Gareth Southgate over the England manager’s passionate defence of Harry Maguire and says his speech will have ‘poured petrol on the fire’.

The Manchester United centre-back’s inclusion in the Three Lions squad for this month’s internationals was criticised due to his lack of game time for the Red Devils, having made just one substitute appearance in the Premier League this season.

He was also given a particularly rough time when introduced at half-time of Tuesday’s 3-1 friendly win over Scotland, with the Hampden Park fans mocking and jeering him – particularly after he netted an own goal.

Afterwards, Southgate criticised the English media and pundits for creating the situation and branded the criticism and scrutiny Maguire has faced as a ‘joke’ in a passionate post-match press conference.

Sutton, who may have been one of the targets of Southgate’s ire after branding Maguire a ‘training ground player’, has now hit out at the England boss and believes he has made the situation even worse.

‘Southgate poured petrol on the fire with what he said after Tuesday’s game, suggesting “idiots” are to blame for the “joke” that is Harry Maguire’s situation,’ Sutton told the Daily Mail.

Harry Maguire scores own goal

‘Southgate will have to share some of that blame now, though, because he has attracted more attention to the defender.

‘Arsenal fans celebrated when he was brought on against them. Scotland supporters cheered his every pass.

‘It went wrong for Maguire in both of those matches and he can expect more of the same treatment the next time he plays because, thanks to Southgate, rival fans know they’re getting under skins.

‘They won’t suddenly stop their mock cheers, they will double down.

‘It would have been more beneficial for England’s manager to say it is part and parcel of being an elite footballer and that Maguire is tough enough to deal with it.

‘I’m sure he is, and I sympathise with Maguire because it is a big ask for a player who is hardly playing for his club to perform for his country. But the criticism will not stop. Certainly not now.’

Two women who were arrested during a vigil for murdered Sarah Everard will receive payouts from the Metropolitan Police.

The Met was criticised for its ‘heavy handed’ and ‘tone deaf’ reaction to the vigil, which was held out of outrage Ms Everard had been murdered by Wayne Couzens, then a serving police officer.

Patsy Stevenson and Dania Al-Obeid were both detained at the event, held amid ongoing Covid restrictions, on Clapham Common in March 2021.

The event was originally planned by campaign group Reclaim These Streets, which cancelled the protest after Met officers threatened organisers with £10,000 fines under lockdown rules in place at the time.

But members of the public attended anyway, with no police intervention for around six hours before clashes occurred.

Ms Stevenson said: ‘It has taken over two years to reach this conclusion, it’s been a really tiring and difficult process but it has felt important to push for some form of accountability and justice for myself and all women who attended the vigil to express our anger and grief over the murder of Sarah Everard by a serving Metropolitan Police officer.’

Ms Al-Obeid said: ‘I have found this journey incredibly difficult but very important as a survivor of domestic violence and someone who has been failed by the police in that context.

‘I appreciate that the Met Police have acknowledged our motivations for attending it but “badly let down” is an understatement.

‘I have felt abused, abandoned by the police prior to, during and post the vigil – I do not feel protected or safe with any police force.’

A legal battle went on long after the vigil, with the original Reclaim These Streets organisers successfully arguing their right to protest had been breached by the Met.

Now Ms Stevenson and Ms Al-Obeid will receive an undisclosed sum from the force.

Commander Karen Findlay wrote in letters to both women: ‘I wish to emphasise that I fully acknowledge that your motivations in attending the vigil were to express your grief and anger regarding the circumstances of the tragic murder of Sarah Everard, and to express the level of concern and dissatisfaction felt by you and many other women who were understandably feeling badly let down by the Met.

‘The policing plan for the vigil was devised to provide an opportunity for members of the public to attend in order to express their grief and anger.

Two senior judges are due to give their ruling over whether the Metropolitan Police breached the rights of the organisers of a planned vigil for Sarah Everard with its handling of the planned event. Reclaim These Streets (RTS) proposed a socially-distanced vigil for the 33-year-old, who was murdered by former Met officer Wayne Couzens, near to where she went missing in Clapham, south London, in March last year.
The original protest was cancelled after the Met threatened to fine Reclaim These Streets £10,000 (Picture: PA)

‘Acknowledging that the fundamental right to protest remained, the circumstances at the time of the vigil – namely that we were in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic – presented an extremely difficult challenge for policing and the officers present due to the need to balance the potential risk such a gathering could pose to public health.

‘That aside, I appreciate the anger, frustration and alarm your arrest undoubtedly caused you, exacerbated by the subsequent proceedings, and I regret that your opportunity to express your grief and anger was curtailed by your arrest and removal.’

A spokesperson for the Met said: ‘The Clapham Common vigil took place in extraordinary circumstances, in the midst of a pandemic where restrictions on gatherings were in force for very valid public health reasons and in the days immediately following the most appalling murder of Sarah Everard by a serving Met officer.

‘We tried to achieve a balance that recognised the rights of the public to protest and to express their grief and sadness, while also continuing to enforce the relevant Covid legislation.

“‘The actions of individual officers were found by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies to have been appropriate.

‘They acted in good faith, interpreting complex and changing legislation in very challenging circumstances in a way that was entirely consistent with their colleagues working across London at the time.

‘A protracted legal dispute is not in the interests of any party, least of all the complainants who we recognise have already experienced significant distress as a result of this incident.

‘The most appropriate decision, to minimise the ongoing impact on all involved, was to reach an agreed settlement.’

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins cast
The politician has yet another controversial reality TV stint under his belt (Picture: Channel 4)

After controversially facing the jungle on I’m A Celebrity, former Health Secretary Matt Hancock is continuing his reality TV crusade by joining Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

A first look trailer has been released for the gruelling Channel 4 programme… and the Special Forces operatives leading the process don’t hold back from pushing the politician and the other celebrities to the absolute limit of their physical and mental capabilities.

Joining Hancock on the programme will be Gareth Gates, Michelle Heaton, Siva Kaneswaran, Danielle Lloyd, Melinda Messenger and Jermaine Pennant, as well as Gareth Thomas, James Argnet, Montana Brown, Teddy Soares, Amber Turner, Zoe Lyons, Kirsty-Leigh Porter, Perri Shakes-Drayton and Jon-Allan Butterworth.

However, we have no doubt that plenty of viewers will be tuning in with the sole purpose of watching Hancock wrestle while covered in mud, take on terrifying heights and face the unrelenting glare of hardened interrogators.

At the beginning of the trailer, the public figure has a bag torn off his head, as he stands in the pouring rain while facing those in charge of his punishing experience.

During a wrestle with a fellow Celebrity SAS star, he’s knocked off his feet in a blow that looks like it might take the wind right out of him.

Meanwhile, during an interrogation, Hancock looks like his eyes are filling up with tears as he’s told: ‘Relax. You look like you’re about to be executed.’

Despite the ex-Secretary of State sparking huge levels of backlash when he joined the cast of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, he still wound up finishing the competition in third place, behind winner Jill Scott and runner-up Owen Warner.

It was previously claimed that during the interrogations on Celebrity SAS, Hancock will be ‘absolutely destroyed’.

‘We treat everybody the same and we really went at him,’ chief instructor Billy Billingham said earlier this year.

‘In the interrogation bit, he gets destroyed, absolutely destroyed.’

He continued to The Sun: ‘At the time I thought, “Oh, hang on, maybe this is a bit much?” But no, he deserved it.

‘The idea is every single contestant will either leave on day one or will leave as a better version of themselves and with Matt Hancock, he’s still got a long way to go.’

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins returns to on Tuesday September 26 at 9.30pm on Channel 4.

In early July Hollywood officially went on strike after US union the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists voted unanimously to walk out, following weeks of unsuccessful negotiations.

The decision came after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) – who represent studios including Disney, Warner Brothers and Netflix – failed to produce new contracts.

Members have been seeking better pay and increased safeguarding around AI rights among their demands.

A source told The Mirror: ‘The BBC is in crisis as the Hollywood strikes are causing its flagship chat show an absolute headache for its next run later this year.’

The insider added that even British stars have refused publicity and promotion ‘out of solidarity.’

The WGA has also raised issues with the rise of streaming and Artificial Intelligence (AI) threatening the jobs of writers.

The last time there was a writer’s strike was in 2007 when work stopped for 100 days and had massive effects on the economy, costing California alone $2.1 billion (£1.6 billion).

Many famous faces have thrown their support behind the strikes, including Tom Hanks, Pete DavidsonDrew Barrymore, and US President Joe Biden.

The Graham Norton Show returns Friday September 29 at 10.40pm on BBC One.

Harry Maguire insists he is more than capable of handling the abuse that has come his way recently while he also explained why a move away from Manchester United did not materialise over the summer.

The centre-back’s inclusion in the latest England squad was criticised after making just one substitute appearance in the Premier League so far this season and he was mocked mercilessly by Scotland fans in Tuesday’s friendly win in Glasgow, in which he scored an own goal.

Afterwards, manager Gareth Southgate blamed the English media, pundits and even supporters for the treatment and scrutiny Maguire currently faces and labelled the criticism a ‘joke’.

Maguire has now addressed the mockery he has been subjected to in recent months and insists it is not affecting him mentally, while he is happy to keep taking the heat if it means his team-mates are spared of the same kind of treatment.

‘Well, it pretty much takes the pressure away from my team-mates and puts it all on myself! It makes them play better, for sure,’ Maguire told reporters after the 3-1 win over Scotland.

‘I would not say I am a person who struggles with pressure mentally. I have been through a lot in the last couple of years and I have been Manchester United captain for nearly four years.

‘You take a huge lot of responsibility and everything that comes with it – and that is a lot of bad as well as good.

‘But it was a huge honour (to play for England against Scotland). It was a hostile environment – when you hear the national anthem and the way they disrespect that – and they piled pressure on myself. I would not say I am used to it, but I can deal with it.’

Maguire came close to leaving United after West Ham had a £30million bid accepted but talks broke down over personal terms, though the 30-year-old is happy to fight for his place at Old Trafford.

Asked about the failed West Ham move, he continued: ‘How can I put this? We just didn’t come to an agreement and they were happy for me to stay and I was happy to fight for my place. I want to do that and every time I train or play I will give everything.

‘I considered everything (in the summer) and I know, at the moment, when I have not started a game in the first four of the season, the story comes to me.

‘I finished off last season with two very strong performances for England and I have played in all five matches to help put us where we are in qualifying, so I need to keep performing when I get chosen.

‘Listen, at club football, I want to play games, I want to play football. The first four weeks were hard because it was one game a week and the manager (Erik Ten Hag) didn’t select me, but we have lots of games coming up now and I am sure I will play lots of games.’

Role models and innovators in the engineering and technology fields have been honoured at a prestigious ceremony in London.

The Engineering Talent Awards (ETAs) seek to celebrate, attract and develop talent throughout the sector, with a particular focus on championing female, ethnic minority, LGBT+ and disabled engineers.

Known for its commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, Metro.co.uk partnered with founders EqualEngineers and the Royal Academy of Engineering to help recognise those making the industry accessible to everyone.

Metro executive editor Richard Hartley-Parkinson was in attendance to deliver the night’s keynote speech, paying tribute to the winners while reaffirming the outlets’ commitment to championing diversity.

Amitoj Singh, of Ethical Power Connections Limited, was named Executive Leader of the Year. Samiksha Raviraja was crowned Student of the Year for her work at the University of Leicester, where she is studying Aerospace Engineering.

Her achievements and commitment to being a role model were so compelling, she was also awarded the coveted Overall Excellence in Engineering Award.

Elsewhere, there were big wins for corporate leaders like Wessex Water and Jacobs ACE Network, while University College London lifted the Inclusion Programme of the Year award for their partnership with BADU Sport on their ‘Bridging the Gap’ campaign, which supports more than 90 students with free bespoke tuition.

My Mum, Your Dad
My Mum, Your Dad has been an instant hit with viewers (Picture: ITV)

Although My Mum, Your Dad was originally hailed as ‘middle-aged Love Island’ fans have expressed which dating show they prefer.

Davina McCall’s latest series for parents is an instant hit, with many people commenting on how emotional the first few episodes were.

This series isn’t quite as long as the ITV2 show, which is hosted by Maya Jama, so instead of six to eight weeks of grafting, viewers are being treated to 10-hour-long episodes.

Wednesday’s edition saw the parents participate in an ‘acceptance workshop’ where they all sat together in the garden and opened up on the things holding them back.

Janey, 47, from West Sussex revealed she dedicated most of her life looking after her son Will, 20, for most of his life.

‘Things hold me back I want that connection but it’s very deep-rooted, she tearfully said. ‘I am adopted I’ve got the best parents in the world but yeah it’s hard.’

Love Island
The show was branded a cross between Love Island and The Parent Trap(Picture: ITV)

Fans were moved by tonight’s episode, with some claiming this series blows Love Island ‘out of the water.’

‘#MyMumYourDad is wiping the floor with #LoveIsland, real people with life stories. I am INVESTED, their kids are a credit to them as well,’ one person wrote.

Another agreed: ‘@MyMumYourDadUK is incredibly endearing, I feel really emotional these kids absolutely dote on their parents and it’s beautiful to see although I’m only 29, I relate to this show more than I ever could love island or whatever. What a lovely show.’

A third person joked: ‘I’d watch #MyMumYourDad any day over Love Island. The only thing missing though is conversations about the latest air fryer and which 80s pop artists you had a crush on. What an absolutely brilliant show 👏.’

While another claimed they will ‘never watch Love Island again’ after tuning into the latest spin-off.

Speaking about the importance of the show at a special screening of the first episode, that took place at the ITV offices in London, host Davina also stressed how special the show is to her.

‘I just wanted to see midlifers represented in terms of dating,’ she said.

‘In your forties and fifties and when you’ve got children, life is complicated, but more than ever you feel that you are at a point in your life where you deserve to find love.

‘They deserve to find love and spend the rest of their lives with somebody. You know when,’ Davina said before abruptly having to stop talking. ‘It’s about opening the door and coming home to someone.’

My Mum, Your Dad continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.

Ozzy Osbourne was spotted being helped into a wheelchair, as the rockstar recently revealed that he’s set to undergo a surgical procedure.

In photographs taken in Los Angeles, the 74-year-old could be seen getting out of a car, as a man wearing a facemask stood with his hands on the handles of a wheelchair.

As Ozzy went to take a seat in the chair, the man in question pushed him, as a woman also stood by.

The Black Sabbath singer was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003, but didn’t go public with his diagnosis for another 17 years.

In 2019, he underwent surgery after suffering a fall at his home in LA, explaining at the time that he initially thought as he fell that he had become paralysed.

Then earlier this year, the rocker announced that he was unable to go on tour following multiple procedures to treat his spinal injury.

Ozzy revealed in a new episode of his family’s podcast The Osbournes Podcast that he has another surgery in the pipeline, which will bring his total number of procedures following his 2019 fall up to four.

‘He said: ‘My lower back is, I’m going for an epidural soon because what’s happening, what they’ve discovered is the neck has been fixed, below the neck there’s two vertebrae where the bike hit me and disintegrated, there’s nothing left of ’em,’ he said, Blabbermouth reported.

After his son Jack Osbourne asked: ‘Are they fusing discs?’ Ozzy responded explained that he ‘didn’t know’ what the medical professionals were going to be doing.

‘All I know is right now, I’m in a lot of pain, I’m in a lot of discomfort,’ he added.

Ozzy and his wife Sharon Osbourne confirmed that this would be his fourth surgery.

He continued: ‘In my back, the two discs, and the muscles on my shoulders have separated from my skeleton, and that’s why I lean forward as it’s like gravity is bringing my head forward.’

Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland ‘accused of sexual assault and pursuing young fans’ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/rick-and-morty-co-creator-justin-roiland-accused-of-sexual-assault-19496551/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/rick-and-morty-co-creator-justin-roiland-accused-of-sexual-assault-19496551/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 21:11:47 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19496551

Justin Roiland has been accused of using his success to lure young fans, it has been claimed.

The 43-year-old co-created the hugely popular adult animated sitcom, Rick and Morty, along with Dan Harmon, and voiced both roles.

Earlier this year, he was dropped from the program after facing domestic abuse allegations, but was later cleared of the charges.

In a bombshell new expose by NBC News, he is alleged to have used his fame to develop relationships with young – and sometimes underage – fans, with 11 people coming forward.

The outlet spoke to multiple women and nonbinary people who claim to have interacted to Roiland, with many of them, including three who were under 16 at the time, alleging that their discussions turned sexual.

The actor was accused of approaching young fans on both social media and dating apps, and would shower them in compliments before asking about their sexuality, and requesting to meet.

One woman, who remained anonymous, claimed that he messaged her on Tinder with a reference to Rick and Morty in 2019, when she was 20, and although she was unfamiliar with his work, she understood that he was famous.

The publication reports that she replied by asking if they could ‘go shopping and have fun’, while also suggesting a coffee and a chat and making him aware that she was under 21.

They reportedly met that night and went to a restaurant where he bought her ‘mixed drinks’ – she claimed that she had two beverages and felt drunk, after which they went shopping and back to his hotel room.

Roiland allegedly asked her to perform oral sex on him, which she initially refused and resisted – but he reportedly pushed her head towards his crotch.

‘From the moment it happened, I knew that it was not okay,’ she told NBC. ‘But I felt a lot of different feelings, like that it was my fault. I felt guilty for asking him to buy me stuff. I felt maybe I owed it to him. And I was embarrassed.’

He also voices some of the characters (Picture: Adult Swim)

They continued speaking after the incident but the woman allegedly confronted him over text messages, which were obtained by the outlet.

In the exchange, she reportedly said he didn’t handle the ‘sexual stuff’ in the best way, explaining that ‘consent is important’, to which he apologized and clarified that he ‘didn’t get consent’.

In messages published on the publication’s site, she claimed that he said he thought it ‘turned her on to be forced’.

Roiland’s attorney addressed some of the allegations made by NBC News, claiming that the creator felt ‘duped and taken advantage of’ by the woman who suggested they should go shopping, alleging that she offered to sell him her pornographic videos – but did not respond to the forced oral sex claims.

She reportedly responded that she offered to sell her content after he expressed an interest, but quoted him double the price she normally charges and never went through with it.

Justin Roiland
Justin has yet to publicly address the claims (Picture: Getty)

NBC reports that the messages they reviewed showed that he would have identical conversations with people he approached, discussing the program and his success before usually asking the recipients their ages and sexualities.

Some claimed that they were 16 at the time, with Roiland reportedly describing two unnamed women – who spoke to the outlet anonymously – as ‘jailbait’.

In May, 2016, Roiland reportedly messaged a 19-year-old when he was 36, praising her artwork – something that initially delighted the teenager.

They continued to chat and he allegedly invited her to his home in LA the following year, paying for the tickets from her home of Pennsylvania himself.

The woman revealed that her dad voiced his concerns about Roiland’s intentions, to which he vowed that he would ‘make absolutely 100% sure nothing bad would happen’, in messaged obtained by the outlet.

According to NBC, he discussed sex and asked whether she was ‘into girls’, before the trip – which took place in March, 2017.

After he threw a party to celebrate the third series of Rick and Morty, they were left alone with a female friend, when they allegedly got into the hot tub while drinking.

She explained that she doesn’t remember much of the night in question, but has full recollection of the sexual acts – alleging that Roiland asked them both to perform sexual acts on each other, before she had sex with him while the friend was there, something that she felt uncomfortable about.

After this, she said she went back to a guest room to discuss the incident with a friend on the phone, and shared her belief that she was more ‘incapacitated than usual’, and later expressed her discomfort to the star.

Justin Roiland
He was cleared of domestic abuse allegations earlier this year (Picture: AP)

The woman alleged that he propositioned her for sex the following morning and she consented, but felt pressure to let him film it.

While Roiland has yet to speak out publicly over the claims, his lawyer, Andrew Brettler, added that the allegations against him are ‘false and defamatory’.

Concerning the Pennsylvania resident, Brettler claimed that the pair had ‘consensual sex’ before the alleged hot tub incident – something she said she does not remember – and added that Roiland was not responsible for sexual acts that took place between her and his friend.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Roiland’s reps for a comment.

Sam and Lydia talk in the Dingle household in Emmerdale
Sam makes a decision (Picture: ITV)

Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) continues to struggle in the aftermath of being raped by Craig Reed (Ben Addis) in Emmerdale.

Her feelings of shock and betrayal that her childhood friend, the father of her baby Toby who died at birth, could do such a thing have been compounded by guilt. Lydia worried that she might have led Craig on or encouraged him in some way, although she very firmly told him that she was happily married and she didn’t want sex with him.

Having to go back to work in the office where the attack took place makes everything much harder, as Karen Blick told us.

‘She has a physical response, kind of post traumatic stress as a result of what she’s been through. Seeing him again brings up the images of what happened, the thoughts, the feelings regarding that. So she’s trying to process that.’

Karen commented that Craig’s attitude after the rape totally influences Lydia’s responses to what’s happened and how she deals with it.

‘That’s the place where it happened, seeing the perpetrator who’s denying it even happened and her version of events. She’s being gaslighted and that’s just compounding her day to day life and how she’s able to cope or not cope. The self doubt, the feelings of guilt, people are not going to believe her. As time progresses for Lydia that becomes worse.’

A promotional shot of Lydia Dingle in Emmerdale
The ordeal begins to impact Lydia’s loved ones (Picture: ITV)

It also affects her family as Lydia is unable to confide in Sam (James Hooton) about what’s happened and emotionally shuts down. He has no idea why she’s behaving differently towards him and makes plans to go to Ireland. Sam does his best to reconcile with his wife before he leaves, but he feels she’s pushing him away – and wonders whether Craig has replaced him in her affections.

‘They’re a really strong, solid couple who absolutely love each other dearly,’ Karen told us. ‘They are soul mates. Lydia’s biggest fear is how will Sam view her once he knows what’s happened. Will he look at her in the same way? That’s what she fears. because she feels so bad about what happened and she worries about how Sam will feel about her. Will Sam believe her? All sorts of things go through her mind.’

As Sam leaves for Ireland, worrying about his relationship with his wife, Karen said that this is a complete low point for Lydia.

‘Lydia is terrified this could mean the end of her marriage to Sam, which is her absolute world,’ she explained.

‘And the end of being part of the Dingle family which means so, so much to Lydia. She grew up in care, in isolation, she’s estranged in many ways from her own family, so the Dingles are her absolute world.

‘In terms of their marriage going forward, I really hope they can support each other and come out the other end.’

The wife of notorious Mexican drug cartel leader Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman is being released from prison in the United States.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, 34, was released from federal custody on Wednesday, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed.

The wife of the notorious Mexican drug lord was serving a three-year sentence at a federal prison in Texas. She was moved to a halfway house in Long Beach, California earlier this year as authorities prepared to release her early.

Coronel was born in the United States but was raised in rural Durango, Mexico, the same area where Guzman’s criminal organization gained power in the 1990s and 2000s.

She is the daughter of Inés Coronel Barreras, one of Guzman’s lieutenants in the Sinaloa Cartel, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for drug trafficking in Mexico.

Coronel was a former teenage beauty pageant queen in Mexico. Guzman married her in 2007, shortly after she turned 18.

In 2011, Coronel gave birth to Guzman’s twin daughters. They were born at a hospital in Lancaster, California and hold US citizenship.

In 2021, she pleaded guilty to federal charges for conspiracy to traffic cocaine, methamphetamines, and other narcotics. She also pleaded guilty to money laundering and property exchange with a known drug trafficker.

Prosecutors argued that she acted as a courier for her husband. In court, she begged a federal judge for leniency.

She agreed to forfeit $1.5million from her criminal proceeds and was sentenced to three years in prison. Her sentence was later reduced.

In August, Guzman filed paperwork asking a federal judge to allow Coronel to visit him in prison after her release.

Guzman is being held at ADX Florence, one of the highest security prisons in the US. It is unclear if his request will be accepted by authorities, or if his wife and daughters want to visit him.

Guzman, now 66, has at least 13 other children from three other wives. Several of his sons, known Los Chapitos, were charged in the US for maintaining their father’s empire and transitioning into trafficking fentanyl.

One of Los Chapitos, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, was arrested in Culiacan in January after a tense battle with the Mexican military.

Towie star Pete Wicks revealed that Holly Willoughby has made her feelings towards him known, and it isn’t positive.

The TV personality, 35, claims the This Morning host, 42,’genuinely hates’ him after claiming Holly mocked his sex life.

In the latest episode of their Staying Relevant podcast, Pete and co-host Sam Thompson discussed interviewing the presenter at this year’s National Television Awards.

Sam enthused: ‘She’s like the queen of the NTAs,’ before Pete quipped: ‘former queen.’

Pete added: ‘Okay, so I’ve met Holly quite a few times. And I think she’s really lovely. However, she’s so good at this that she’s not that interesting to interview.

‘And also I have a sneaking suspicion that she genuinely hates me.’

He added: ‘And she did throw some shade, she does it every time. So, I wasn’t that fussed.

‘I think it was from Celebrity Juice a few years ago and I think she thinks I’m some kind of f***boy a***hole and she would be absolutely correct in that but she makes it known.’

Speaking about the savage remark Holly allegedly made, Sam said: ‘Pete asked a really professional question. And Pete then went, “Yeah we know Alison [Hammond] we shared a bed with her.”

Pete interjected: ‘And she went, “That doesn’t surprise me with your track record.”‘

At this year’s NTAs, Holly spoke on the red carpet about how her year had unfolded, stating in an apparent swipe at former co-host Phillip Schofield: ‘It has been a difficult year for everybody but what’s lovely is you find that people rally around you and the goodwill is there.

‘People want things to move on. It feels different,’ she told The Sun.

Earlier this year, Phillip, 61, quit This Morning and then stepped away from ITV altogether after he admitted to lying about an affair that he had with a younger male colleague to his coworkers and loved ones.

Manchester United duo intervene to de-escalate tension between Jadon Sancho and Erik ten Hag https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/man-utd-duo-intervene-to-quell-jadon-sancho-and-erik-ten-hag-tension-19496463/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/man-utd-duo-intervene-to-quell-jadon-sancho-and-erik-ten-hag-tension-19496463/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 20:34:46 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19496463

Monday’s clear-the-air meeting has not mended the relationship yet (Picture: Getty)

Manchester United chiefs John Murtough and Richard Arnold have been forced to step in to try and de-escalate the dispute between Erik ten Hag and Jadon Sancho, according to reports.

There are huge question marks over the 23-year-old’s future at Old Trafford under Ten Hag after he publicly refuted his manager’s claims regarding his performances in training.

Sancho was not included in United’s matchday squad to face Arsenal before the international break, with Ten Hag citing the winger’s less-than-impressive showings in training as the reason.

But the former Borussia Dortmund attacker was clearly livid with his manager’s comments and posted a message on social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter – disputing Ten Hag’s version of events and saying he was being made a ‘scapegoat’.

Sancho has now deleted his post and the pair held clear-the-air talks when he reported to Carrington on Monday, but it appears the situation is still not resolved.

According to the Daily Mail, the dispute is proving rather complicated and both football director Murtough and CEO Arnold are taking an active role in trying to resolve the issue.

Murtough is playing a particularly prominent role in trying to de-escalate tensions while Arnold is being regularly updated on the progress of talks, but so far there is still something of an impasse between player and manager.

Although Sancho removed his social media post – which was viewed as the first step towards a resolution – the matter is still rumbling on and it remains to be seen whether the winger will be involved against Brighton on Saturday.

Despite Antony being on a leave of absence and a host of players having been away on international duty, there is no guarantee that Sancho will be back in the matchday squad.

There is thought to be a degree of sympathy for Sancho with United not receiving approval from the player to go public with his mental health battle and there was concern behind the scenes when Ten Hag publicly remarked about his ‘mental’ fitness.

Murtough and Arnold are hopeful that the dispute will be settled but the fact they have been drawn into the issue underlines the depth of the rift between Sancho and Ten Hag.

The United manager will speak to the media on Friday at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Brighton with Sancho set to be the primary topic of conversation.

In the wake of Ten Hag saying his performances in training were not at the level required, Sancho had tweeted: ‘Please don’t believe everything you read! I will not allow people saying things that is completely untrue, I have conducted myself in training very well this week.

‘I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into, I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair! All I want to do is play football with a smile on my face and contribute to my team.

‘I respect all decisions that are made by the coaching staff, I play with fantastic players and grateful to do so which I know every week is a challenge. I will continue to fight for this badge no matter what!’

Coronation Street spoilers: Evelyn and Roy at loggerheads as she moves in – over potatoes https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/coronation-street-spoilers-evelyn-and-roy-at-odds-as-she-moves-in-19495894/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/coronation-street-spoilers-evelyn-and-roy-at-odds-as-she-moves-in-19495894/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 19:55:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19495894
Evelyn in her pyjamas in Coronation Street
Evelyn was not happy with her new flatmate (Picture: ITV)

Roy Cropper (David Neilson) recently came up with a solution to a very specific set of housing problems on Coronation Street.

With Cassie (Claire Sweeney) having moved in with Tyrone (Alan Halsall) and the girls, Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) was refusing to be under the same roof with her but that meant staying at the precinct flat, clutching a hot water bottle because it was a less than cosy situation.

Roy’s idea was for Evelyn to move in with him, and Lauren (Cait Fitton) – who was also looking for a place to stay – could have the precinct flat.

Over the years Roy has had a range of different flatmates. There was his beloved wife Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh), of course. But at other times Carla Connor (Alison King) has been a long-term resident, as has Roy’s niece Nina (Mollie Gallagher). Even Ken Barlow (William Roache) has stayed at the flat.

So Roy, despite being one of the Street’s most eccentric characters, has also shown himself to be prepared to adapt to the needs and ways of people very different to himself.

Evelyn Plummer, however, is a whole new level of different. And life with the famously cantankerous great-grandmother did not get off to a great start in Wednesday (September 13)’s episode.

To start with, she was woken at an early hour by Roy listening to the Shipping Forecast. He finds it soothing, while she finds people talking about ‘German bights and dogging’ anything but relaxing. Roy offered to use headphones while listening, but Evelyn had a point to make and she wasn’t ready to be appeased.

Issuing orders to Roy to get some shopping in because his cupboards were empty she flounced back to the flat.

Roy tried to be accommodating (Picture: ITV)

Later Tyrone told Evelyn to go easy on Roy, reminding her that it was him who was doing her a favour and not the other way round. Accordingly she went off to do the shopping herself.

On her return, it was Roy’s turn to find fault. They would be having lamb chops, jacket potatoes and salad, Evelyn informed him.

‘Delicious,’ he said. ‘Potentially.’

Was he casting aspersions on Evelyn’s cooking skills? Well, no. It was her choice of spud that had him bothered. These were just standard baking potatoes and not his preferred option: ‘Maris Piper. The Rolls Royce of jacket potatoes.’

Evelyn stormed out, but later she returned with a bag of Roy’s preferred root vegetables and apologised for ‘stalking out.’

‘I’m sorry I was so lofty on the potato front,’ he conceded.

‘Nothing wrong with knowing what you like,’ she told him.

It seemed like peace had been restored, but by the time they headed back to the flat the Shipping Forecast discussion had reignited, Evelyn was getting irritable and Roy was trying to keep the peace.

If they can get through this settling in period without killing each other they’re going to end up being the best of flatmates – and in the meantime for the viewers they’re comedy gold.

Coronation Street spoilers: Tragic scenes as Billy wishes to be in dying Paul’s place as he gets him a wheelchair https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/coronation-street-spoilers-billy-wishes-to-be-in-dying-pauls-place-19495816/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/coronation-street-spoilers-billy-wishes-to-be-in-dying-pauls-place-19495816/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 19:55:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19495816
Billy talks to Paul outside their flat in Coronation Street
Billy wishes he was in Paul’s shoes instead (Picture: ITV)

As Paul Foreman (Peter Ash)’s physical health deteriorates on Coronation Street, it seems that almost every day brings new challenges for him and his partner Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) to deal with.

Paul was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in April this year when he started suffering from weakness in one of his hands. He knows that the condition will get progressively worse and that ultimately he’s facing an early death because of it.

While his friends and family have tried their best to be supportive, one person who really understands is Paul’s friend Shelly (Natalie Amber), who he met at a MND support group. When he first met Shelly Paul was overwhelmed at the sight of her in her wheelchair, as he realised it was a glimpse into his own future. As he got to know her she’s been a huge help to him, as she knows exactly what he’s going through.

In Wednesday (September 13)’s episode he’d had a letter offering him an appointment with a palliative care nurse, and the suggestion that he might be looking at end of life care completely threw him.

A chat with Shelly helped him to put things in perspective, as she explained her own palliative care nurse was a huge help to her and it was all about making the most of the time he had left and being as comfortable as possible.

Paul told her about some things on his bucket list. He said he’d never seen the iron men on Crosby beach, and he’d never been to Scotland. But mostly, he admitted heartbreakingly, he just wanted to hang around with Billy.

Paul’s terminal diagnosis has, of course, been massively hard on Billy and he hasn’t always handled things as well as he could. He has a tendency to try to take over and do things for his partner, leaving Paul feeling frustrated.

When Paul got back from Shelly’s – walking painfully and with difficulty using a stick – he was annoyed to see Billy about to bring a wheelchair into the flat. It was a harsh reminder of the day that’ll come soon when Paul can no longer walk.

‘I can just cover it with a bit of tarpaulin,’ Billy suggested. Paul said he would still know it was there. But he conceded that one day he would need it. ‘Have wheelchair, will travel.’

‘I wish it was me and not you,’ Billy told him, movingly. ‘I do. I just wish I could take it off of you.’

So, so sad.

Courtney and Aadi kiss in Coronation Street
The truth was finally revealed (Picture: ITV)

The bistro in Coronation Street is the place to go if you’re after a bit of drama served with your delicious lunch.

Wednesday (September 13)’s episode dished up quite the feast as Dev (Jimmi Harkishin)’s lunch date with Darren Vance (Ryan Early) went just about as well as we were expecting – considering secret lovers Courtney (Stephanie Davis) and Aadi (Adam Hussain) were also present.

The meal was intended to celebrate Dev and Darren going into business together, so Aadi was invited because he’d helped to get the deal through. Amy (Elle Mulvaney) came along as Aadi’s plus one, meaning that there was another person around the table who knew what was going on between Courtney and Aadi and could cringe on behalf of the viewer at key points.

Prior to the meal Aadi had become annoyed when Dev referred to Amy as if she was his girlfriend, so he pretended he already had a girlfriend called Monica. At the lunch table Dev mentioned Monica, and Courtney told Aadi she was very intrigued to hear all about her.

Aadi launched into some high praise of his beautiful, intelligent girlfriend – with Courtney realising his words were directed at her. This lit a spark of passion in her and it wasn’t long before she was heading for the bistro’s bathroom, texting Aadi to join her.

And that’s where Dev caught them, glued to each other’s faces. And, speaking of faces, Dev’s initial reaction was that Darren would rearrange Aadi’s if he knew that he was messing about with his wife.

Back at the table more tensions were rising as Darren revealed to the people who were still seated that he thought his wife was having an affair and he was determined to find out who with.

When Courtney returned to the table she confirmed she was, indeed, having an affair. ‘Makes us even,’ she snapped at Darren, who apparently hasn’t been a model of fidelity himself.

Dev looking horrified in Coronation Street

Courtney was feeling reckless and said that the person she was seeing was ‘hiding in plain sight.’ As Darren got drunk and threatened to ‘pulverise’ whoever it was, his wife had an additional clue. ‘He’s got great hair,’ she said as she flounced out.

Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) had been getting suspicious that Dev’s interest in Courtney was more than just friendly and when she factored in Dev’s magnificent head of hair she put two and two together. Darren was one step ahead of her and was already lunging at Dev.

With his dad’s face at risk of being rearranged, Aadi had to speak up and reveal that he, not Dev, is Courtney’s secret lover.

Darren was so gobsmacked he didn’t even think of thumping him, merely muttered that he would spend the rest of his life stacking shelves for his old man.

Back at home, Aadi was putting a brave face on the whole situation and told Dev he thought he was in love with Courtney and would have a word with Darren and sort everything out. Dev – older, wiser and way more experienced in messy relationships – didn’t think it would be that easy. He despaired at how his son had managed to mess up his life and mess up a business deal which could have made all their lives more comfortable.

And then Courtney appeared. Darren had kicked her out so she’d rushed straight to her young boyfriend’s house.

Dev insisted she couldn’t stay with them even after Aadi had gallantly offered to give up his own bed for her. He told her to leave.

‘If she’s not welcome here then neither am I,’ Aadi said, making his dad choose between his business ambitions and his son. ‘I’m telling you straight, Dad – if she goes, I go! For good!

‘Who are you going to back – your son and his girlfriend or your good mate?’

Dev couldn’t cope with either the decision or the situation – so he walked out of his own house. He’s going to have to walk back in eventually, but will he be ready to face Aadi?

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is set to hold showdown talks with Andre Onana over his decision to return to international duty with Cameroon.

The £47million summer signing hung up his national team gloves at the end of last year after falling out with manager Rigobert Song, even leaving the World Cup in Qatar early to fly home.

But he ended his exile this month after the Cameroon football federation and even the government helped broker peace talks, with Onana keeping a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Burundi on Tuesday to secure qualification for January’s Africa Cup of Nations.

While that is good news for Cameroon, it has presented something of a headache for United with the goalkeeper potentially missing as many as nine matches in all competitions.

To add further drama into the mix, The Mirror are reporting that the 27-year-old never brought up the prospect of ending his international retirement during transfer talks and even told Ten Hag he had no intention of returning.

Ten Hag will now hold showdown talks with his goalkeeper to ascertain whether he plans to represent Cameroon at the African Cup of Nations, or whether his outing was simply a one off.

The Dutch coach is hoping it is the latter and ideally does not want his number one keeper playing in the month-long tournament, particularly when there are significant question marks over the backup options.

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag and Andre Onana

United brought in Altay Bayindir on deadline day as a late replacement for Dean Henderson, who joined Crystal Palace, but the Turkish keeper is yet to make his debut.

Tom Heaton, who is now 37, is another potential option but ideally Ten Hag is hoping that Onana decides against playing at the Africa Cup of Nations, with the former Inter keeper believed to still be undecided about his long-term international future.

Ten Hag was asked about Onana’s decision to return to Cameroon duty before the international break, saying: ‘I know everything about it, of course we spoke about it.

‘We are in good contact with Andre. We are on the same page. We know how we constructed the squad and can deal with it, if we need to.’

The African Cup of Nations takes place between January 13 and February 11 meaning Onana would miss Premier League games against Tottenham, Wolves, West Ham and Aston Villa if Cameroon reach the final of the tournament.

There are also two rounds of FA Cup ties and potentially a two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final scheduled over that period as well, while a last-16 Champions League match could be played just 48 hours after the AFCON final, meaning there are a total of nine matches where United could be without Onana.

Coleen Nolan will stay on Loose Women ‘as long as they want me,’ despite getting upset by online trolls and battling almost-daily feud rumours, which the panel laugh off.

The musician and TV star has been a staple on the daytime chat show for 23 years, with only a brief stint away from the panel in 2013 because she ‘wasn’t enjoying it at that stage’.

Since coming back however, she sees the show as her ‘second home’ and the women as her ‘sisters’ – and it upsets her that people ‘want to tear it down.

‘Contrary to what’s being printed all over the place, it’s not a toxic environment at all in any way,’ Coleen tells Metro.co.uk ahead of the announcement of her new show and tour, Naked.

‘We do genuinely all get on like family. They are like my sisters. Sometimes I’ll think, “You’re really getting on my nerves today” – like I would with my sister – and then the next minute we’re having a coffee together or we’re laughing.’

Constantly hearing rumours or reports that the panellists secretly hate each other is ‘a shame,’ she goes on. ‘I don’t know what’s going on but people are trying to cause situations that don’t need to be there. And I think that’s sad.’

‘I couldn’t sit on a panel day in, day out next to women that I absolutely hate, and laugh at their jokes, I just couldn’t. I would leave! I left before because I wasn’t enjoying it at one point, and that was years ago.’

The cast are well aware of the rift rumours, often alluding to the claims with a tongue-in-cheek snark during the show, and Coleen reveals they often laugh at it behind the scenes too. ‘”Coleen and Ruth at war” is a good one,’ she laughs. ‘We all look at it and go, “Oh my God, we’re at war today. We hate each other this week.” It’s honestly hilarious.’

Despite how she may come across on Loose Women, Coleen admits she is ‘sensitive’ and hates when she says something that might have upset something – but is becoming ‘hardened’ to people hitting out at her on social media.

‘I’m always thinking, “Oh Christ, what have I just said?”

‘[Loose Women’s] appeal is that you can only be honest, it’s an opinion-based show. Not everyone is going to agree with your opinion. I’m quite sensitive to that but lots of the other girls aren’t bothered if they get trolled. They’re like, “well, that’s my opinion.” But I’m like, “oh no!”‘

The discussions can get intense but ‘the next minute we’re laughing’ (Picture: ITV/Shutterstock)

When Loose Women first started over 20 years ago, she says, ‘you could absolutely, 100% say what your opinion is but nowadays you can’t because there’s always someone to offend.’

‘And I don’t really want to offend anyone. But I’m asked my opinion and I have to be honest, but you go, “I don’t think I should say that because I don’t want to offend.”‘

‘I never ever, ever, intentionally set out to hurt anybody or upset them. So sometimes when I get messages going “you said this, and that’s really wrong and that really upset me” – well, it upsets me that I’ve upset you because I don’t mean to. But if it’s just that someone doesn’t agree with my opinion, isn’t that what life’s about? Life would be very boring if we all agreed on everything. ‘

She points to the journalists on the panel, like Jane Moore, Janet Street Porter, as being totally hardened to people attacking their opinion online, calling them ‘brave and fearless.’

‘They want people to like them, but if they don’t [like them], what can they do? Whereas I’ll come home and go, “Why don’t they like me?” I’m like a pathetic puppy that’s been kicked. That’s what I’m like.

‘I’m getting hardened a bit to it, but what I hate is when it’s been interpreted completely the opposite how I said it. I might have an opinion and they take one line from it, and people are going “I can’t believe you said that,’ but they haven’t even watched the show, they’ve taken it from a headline! Or someone takes one line out of what I’ve said and makes a double-page spread of it. That annoys me.

‘I’m kind of learning to go, “it doesn’t matter, there’ll be a different headline next week.” But it is hard, and it’s much harder now than it was 20 years ago because of social media.’

She goes on: ‘It’s hard to do an opinion-based show nowadays, that’s why I think it’s sad when they try and tear it down because it’s the one show on telly that celebrates women of all ages, all opinions, and all different eras of how we grew up.’

Recently rumours emerged that Penny Lancaster had stepped back from the show, and Coleen grins as she admits if she was as ‘bloody rich’ as Penny, she’d do the same thing.

‘Penny hasn’t done it for months and months. She’s mainly been over in LA with Rod and he’s been touring. She only really came in when she was available, when she and Rod were in London. And then she became a Special Constable, and she’s got a family and she’s also bloody rich enough to do what she wants!

‘Not being funny, as much as I love it I probably wouldn’t spend four days away from home every week if I was loaded. “I might just do one this week!” But Penny never left on horrible terms, we all got on great with her. But she’s got other things going on in life. Her kids are still young. And she’s married to a massive rock star who tours the world. I’d rather do that to be honest!’

Mark's Club 50th Anniversary Party In London
Coleen joked that she’s be off traveling the world with her rockstar husband rather than doing four days on Loose Women if she was in Penny’s shoes (Picture: Getty Images for The Birley Clubs)

The panel changes semi-regularly, and Coleen has a dream team of new women she’d love to see joining the show, including Dawn French and even Adele – but most eagerly, she names Miriam Margolyes, who is ‘brilliant, she makes me belly laugh.’

‘Production wouldn’t like it, because we’re live and we’re at half past 12. So it would be very, very hard to police,’ she says, alluding to Miriam’s legendary explicit rants.

A past-the-watershed Loose Women wouldn’t work however, as Coleen reckons one of the reasons the daytime show is so popular is ‘because people like what you’re insinuating, they like an innuendo.’

‘I can look at the camera and know that Mrs Smith knows exactly what I’m thinking, whether it’s rude or angry. I don’t necessarily think people want to hear us sitting there effing and blinding and being really graphic about things. The whole funniness of it is, “I know what you’re thinking, but you can’t say it.”‘

Coleen is generally on Loose Women up to four times a week, but she’s now going back to her roots and hitting the road for her new show Naked, which sees her perform and interact with audiences across Britain.

‘You can expect every emotion going, I want people singing along, I want them crying. I want them laughing, I want them dancing. I’m going to try and make it almost autobiographical but through music, all the different parts of my life. I’m hoping to have screens up there so I can show pictures of when I was singing on stage at two years old with my family.

‘I want it to be a couple of hours where people don’t have to think about the s**t that’s going on in the world. Because let’s be honest, it’s so depressing at the moment. I just want it to be a really good fun, night-out, party kind of atmosphere.’

Coleen Nolan: Naked tour begins in February 2024, tickets are available from coleentour.com

Scissor Sisters star Jake Shears’ coffee intake will make you shudder https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/never-mind-the-buzzcocks-jake-shears-scissor-sisters-coffee-19496342/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/never-mind-the-buzzcocks-jake-shears-scissor-sisters-coffee-19496342/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19496342

Jake Shears has revealed how much coffee he drinks a day… and the quantity may leave your jaws on the floor.

When it comes to the debate of how much coffee is ok to drink a day, you’re likely to receive an array of different answers.

Some may say one is enough, while others might go for multiple… but what do you think about eight shots of coffee?

In the new episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks on Sky Max, Scissor Sisters star Jake revealed that’s how much he consumes on a daily basis – and the rest of the panel were understandably gobsmacked.

Host Greg Davies turned to the musician to ask if you would verify how much coffee he drank every day, with the 44-year-old confirming that he drinks two cappuccinos a day, each of which contains four shots to bring his total to eight.

‘My researcher tells me that you open a day with eight shots of espresso,’ Greg announced, with his statement sparking gasps from the other members of the panel.

How much coffee do you drink a day? Have your say in the comments belowComment Now

‘I do,’ Jake answered. ‘I have one four-shot cappuccino first thing, and then when I’m done with that, I go and I get another four-shot cappuccino.’

Despite his admission shocking some in the studio, the singer stressed: ‘It’s not that big of a deal, but people find it shocking.’

Nonetheless, Greg suggested that Jake should walk around with a defribillator on his back like a tortoise, just in case.

Meanwhile, comedian Jamali Maddix declared that Jake is a proper ‘bad boy’, with his leather jacket completing the overall rebellious image.

So would you ever try two four-shot cappuccinos a day? Or is one coffee in the morning enough for you?

According to the British Heart Foundation, consuming around four to five cups of coffee a day ‘should be fine for most people’, the organisation’s dietitian Victoria Taylor said.

‘Research shows that this level of caffeine intake shouldn’t be detrimental to your heart health, affect your cholesterol levels or heart rhythm,’ her advice continued.

‘Although drinking coffee has been shown to increase blood pressure, this effect is usually temporary and is minimised over time if you drink caffeinated drinks regularly.’

Never Mind The Buzzcocks airs tonight at 9pm on Sky Max.

Emmerdale spoilers: Bad news for David ahead of heartbreaking exit  https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/emmerdale-spoilers-bad-news-for-david-ahead-of-heartbreaking-exit-19493254/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/13/emmerdale-spoilers-bad-news-for-david-ahead-of-heartbreaking-exit-19493254/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 18:55:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19493254
Things aren't going great for David in Emmerdale
Things aren’t going great for David (Picture ITV)

With the news that Matthew Wolfenden has decided to leave Emmerdale, speculation naturally turned to how his character will make his exit from the village.

Matthew has played David Metcalfe on Emmerdale for 17 years and even when the character isn’t on screen we’re constantly reminded of him as almost every villager can be seen at some point carrying a bag bearing the name David – from the shop that he runs that’s one of the focal points of village life.

It was in this shop that David got some news that appeared to leave him unsettled in Wednesday (September 13)’s episode. His former partner Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) was in the shop chatting to Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) and Mary (Louise Jameson) about an upcoming food-tasting event at the Hide.

She kept being distracted by texts, which she revealed were from an old school friend who’d recently got back in touch.

The significant things about this old school friend were that he was male and also ‘drop dead gorgeous,’ the boy that almost every girl in the school had been after.

He’d never really noticed Victoria before, but now he was asking her for a date.

‘I’ve been dreaming about this since I was 15,’ she revealed. ‘I feel dead giddy! I fancied the pants off him at school.’

Mary was encouraging but David commented that it was a ‘minefield’ meeting people on line. ‘You should know,’ he said to Mary, which was an unnecessarily cruel remark given how her relationship with Faye (Jane Gurnett) ended so traumatically.

Mary was briefly thrown but gathered herself and said she was still hopeful she’d meet someone one day. Jacob pointed out that Victoria knew this person so he wasn’t a stranger.

‘That’s if he is who he says he is,’ David said, still determined to burst Victoria’s bubble.

‘I’d never forget a face that handsome,’ she said and Mary urged her to meet him. Frankly, we all need to meet him if he’s that beautiful.

But David wasn’t happy, and it’s clear that he still has feelings for Victoria. The couple split up after David tried to pass a driving offence off on Victoria last year.

Despite various attempts from David to make amends and get the relationship back on track, Victoria was clear that she’d had enough.

It seems that David hasn’t entirely given up hope, though.

Could this be leading up to his exit storyline? Matthew Wolfenden has confirmed that the door will be left open for David’s return, so possibly he decides to leave the village after having his heart broken by Victoria getting involved with a new man?

Moira confronts Cain in Butlers about his plan in Emmerdale
Moira confronts Cain (Picture: ITV)

Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) was keeping secrets in Wednesday (September 13)’s Emmerdale. And because Moira (Natalie J. Robb) knows her husband very well, she instantly feared the worst because when Cain keeps a secret it usually means there’s trouble afoot.

Viewers are as much in the dark as Moira is about what’s going on, as Cain enlisted Caleb (William Ash)’s help in a top secret mission soon after receiving a mystery text a few days ago.

Caleb has recently been accepted formally into the Dingle family and has drunk from the ceremonial welly, so he can now be trusted with things like Top Secret Missions.

Cain asked him if he’d be able to go away with him somewhere for a few days and asked him to come up with a plausible excuse to stop Moira, Chas (Lucy Pargeter) and others from being suspicious.

The excuse Caleb came up with was that he was importing some new cars from Holland for his business and needed Cain’s help as a mechanic to check the vehicles were in good order.

The problem with this excuse was that Nate (Jurell Carter) and Nicky (Lewis Cope) are supposed to be partners in Caleb’s business and they hadn’t heard of any Dutch cars being bought.

The other problem with the excuse was that Moira didn’t believe it for one minute.

She thought it was something dodgy that Caleb was dragging Cain into. Caleb could drink from any number of wellies and Moira would still have it in the back of her mind that he’d almost ruined her entire business. She didn’t trust him not to get Cain into trouble.

It wasn’t that long ago that Caleb was roughed up by Harry (Robert Beck) and his thugs when he tried to put a stop to his business being used as a front for moving drugs and guns.

When Moira, Nate and Nicky quizzed Caleb about where he was going with Cain and he responded by sticking to his Dutch cars story, they instantly wondered whether he was really involved in something illegal and dangerous again.

Cain insisted to his wife that he wasn’t in any danger and everything would be fine. ‘You just have to trust me,’ he insisted.

Cain and Caleb quietly discuss their plan at the Woolpack in Emmerdale
Cain and Caleb scheming (Picture: ITV)

She doesn’t, though, and told him not to be surprised if he returned to find the locks had been changed.

This is not as much of a threat as it sounds because nobody ever seems to lock their door on Emmerdale, but the point was made – Moira was not a happy bunny.

She was even less happy later when she overheard Cain and Caleb talking, hearing Caleb say that Moira thinks he’s the instigator, which will take the heat off Cain.

With the brothers looking serious at the prospect of whatever it is that lies ahead, Cain told Caleb it wasn’t too late to back out. ‘Not a chance,’ Caleb said. ‘However this ends we’re in it together.’

Moira stepped out and Cain realised she’d heard them. The look between them conveyed that this was his last chance to change his mind and stay, or at least tell her what was going on. But he picked up his bag and walked out.

What’s the secret mission all about? Is Cain walking into danger? And will Moira still be waiting for him when – or if – he returns?

Jean plays with a lock of Lily's hair in EastEnders
Jean came to Lily’s rescue (Picture: BBC)

Lily Slater (Lillia Turner) has been struggling with motherhood in EastEnders, since giving birth to daughter Charli at just 13-years-old.

It doesn’t help that mum Stacey (Lacey Turner) is keen to take control, leaving Lily feeling as though she hasn’t had the chance to learn how to be a mother.

In tonight’s (September 13) episode, Lily took Charli to the café alongside nan Jean (Gillian Wright), but became overwhelmed when Charli started to cry.

Luckily, Jean was on hand to help Lily comfort Charli, telling her what to do instead of just doing it for her.

With Lily clearly feeling defeated, Jean assured her that it takes time to get used to being a mum, though Lily remained downhearted as she admitted that she didn’t think motherhood was going to be this hard.

Later, after Stacey had put Charli down for her nap, Lily confided in Jean that she was frightened her daughter wouldn’t love her as much as she would Stacey.

Jean was horrified by the suggestion, and wanted to know exactly why Lily felt that way.

She comforted her by explaining how difficult being a mum is, and how it is a job that comes with no training or exams.

While affectionately playing with Lily’s hair, she pointed out that Lily had seen both her and Stacey make mistakes while parenting, but that they just have to keep trying.

Jean was able to drag a small smile out of Lily, but it was clear that she still felt down.

Will Lily continue to struggle, or will she listen to Jean’s words of wisdom and stop being so hard on herself?

Emma threatening Phil in EastEnders
Emma laid out her terms (Picture: BBC)

Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) has been a very naughty boy in recent EastEnders scenes, and he may be set to be caught out if he doesn’t play his cards right.

Phil made the mistake of sleeping with Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit) after a row with fiancé Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace), which could prove more costly than he initially anticipated.

It was clear that his betrayal was bothering him, and soon ex-wife Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) had picked up on his sour mood, pointing out that only money or a woman could leave him feeling like that.

She soon deduced that he had slept with someone, and though Phil remained tight lipped over who it was, Sharon urged him to tell Kat, before she found out elsewhere.

Though Phil insisted she would never find out, Sharon pointed out that those were famous last words, and it would soon transpire that she was right.

Elsewhere, Emma was having her own problems, with Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) still refusing to let her see granddaughter Lexi (Isabella Brown).

She was desperate to keep Lexi in her life, despite having walked out on Lola just weeks before her death, and was hurt that ben wouldn’t give her a chance.

However, she was soon struck with an idea, and a sure fire way to get what she wanted.

Sharon sat at a desk talking to Phil in EastEnders
Sharon realised that Phil had cheated on Kat (Picture: BBC)

Phil was horrified to see that Emma had paid him a visit, while Kat was in the room next door.

He urged her to keep her voice down as she demanded that Phil and Ben allow her to see Lexi.

With their night of passion hanging over them, Emma revealed just how low she was prepared to sink to get what she wanted.

She told Phil, in no uncertain terms, that if he didn’t let her see Lexi, then she would tell Kat everything.

Is Phil and Kat’s relationship set to be destroyed by Emma’s bombshell, or will Phil find a way to keep her quiet?

Manchester United v Nottingham Forest - Premier League
Harry Maguire came ‘very close’ to leaving Man Utd for West Ham (Photo: Getty)

West Ham came ‘very close’ to signing Harry Maguire from Manchester United over the summer, Irons coach Kevin Nolan has revealed.

Maguire seemed destined to leave United having fallen out of favour with Erik ten Hag and getting stripped of the captaincy.

Though the centre-back’s form has badly dipped for his club, he is still a trusted England international and there was a good amount of interest in him during the last transfer window.

West Ham were the clear frontrunners for his signature and after weeks of negotiations they agreed a £30million fee with the Red Devils, in a move that seemed to suit all parties involved.

However, the transfer collapsed with reports suggesting that personal terms could not be agreed and that Maguire wasn’t interested in the move and didn’t even speak to manager David Moyes.

Maguire has ended up staying at Old Trafford – much to the annoyance of fans – though an injury crisis in defence means he will still be of use to Ten Hag.

The Irons are unlikely to revive their interest in the player in January, having since signed former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos from Stuttgart instead.

Now, Nolan has detailed as much as he can about why the move failed to materialise, telling talkSPORT: ‘I think it was very close, I was a bit upset that we didn’t make it [happen].

‘I think it was just in the end, the money didn’t get sorted from what I can gather which is obviously upsetting from our behalf because we wanted to [sign him].

‘Probably upsetting from Harry’s behalf and probably United’s behalf as well.

‘I think the gaffer [Moyes] was in contact with Harry, his agent and everything else but yeah, obviously we then had to move onto our next target.’

That last bit of information would suggest that Maguire did in fact speak to the West Ham manager about the move, though it’s not clear whether the ‘money’ refers to the player’s wages or the transfer fee.

After a difficult start to the season, United will be hoping for better when they host Brighton on Saturday, while West Ham will be aiming to keep their unbeaten start going when they host Manchester City on the same day.

Although her exact cause of death has not yet been determined, a post-mortem examination revealed she had suffered ‘extensive injuries’ suffered over a ‘sustained and extended period of time’ and police are treating her death as a murder investigation.

Police were informed of her death after Urfan contacted authorities in the UK after fleeing to Pakistan with his wife, brother and five children.

Earlier today, a Sialkot police spokesperson Khan Mudassir revealed that three people had been arrested and flown to the UK, the Associated Press reported.

He said the three were handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency, which flew them to Britain from Sialkot in eastern Punjab province.

The trio will now be questioned by police over the circumstances surrounding Sara’s death.

Last week, Sky News shared a video of Sara’s step-mother, Ms Batool, who said her side of the family is willing to cooperate with British police and ‘fight our case in court’.

Sara Sharif?s dad, stepmother and uncle, who are sought in connection with her death, have landed at Gatwick airport after boarding a flight back to the UK from Pakistan.

She could be heard to say: ‘Firstly, I would like to talk about Sara. Sara’s death was an incident. Our family in Pakistan are severely affected by all that is going on.

‘All the media have been giving wrong statements and making up lies.

‘All of our family members have gone into hiding as everyone is scared for their safety.

‘The groceries have run out and there is no food for the kids as the adults are unable to leave their homes out of fear for safety.’

The five children, aged between one and 13, were believed to have been travelling with the trio, but were later revealed to have been staying with their grandfather Muhammad Sharif at his home in Jhelum.

They were found after a police raid and have since been taken into care in Pakistan.

A 10-month-old baby has died after being left in a car in 26°C heat.

The baby’s father, reportedly a lecturer at a university near Lisbon in Portugal, is believed to have forgotten to drop her off at nursery before going to work.

He then went to work – and phoned the emergency services after finding her inside his car and realising his tragic error.

Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The father is said to have parked the family car close to the NOVA University campus creche on Tuesday, before going to his office at the university’s school of science and technology.

Investigators are reportedly working on the theory that the baby girl was asleep and her father simply forgot she was in the car.

The temperature in the area on Tuesday was around 26°C – which means temperatures inside the locked car could have been double that.

The girl’s parents, including her mother who reportedly reached the scene around the time emergency responders arrived, have been offered psychological support.

Autopsy results are yet to be released and are not expected to be made public.

The Policia Judiciaria police force in the city of Setubal near Almada is conducting an ongoing investigation.
