Deadpool 3 will see Ryan Reynolds return to the iconic red suit but a ‘secret role’ for Daniel Radcliffe has sparked fan excitement and multiverse dreams.

The third instalment of R-rated Deadpool will feature the Wrexham owner once again starring as Wade Wilson, the fast-talking mercenary with a heart of gold.

Ryan also confirmed the return of fan favourite X-Men alum Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, dressed for the first time in his bright yellow true-to-comics costume.

Production has been halted amid SAG-AFTRA strikes but that hasn’t stopped fans speculating about possible cast members.

It’s expected that many of the previous film’s core cast will return but rumours of another franchise heavyweight joining the cast have surfaced online.

Daniel Radcliffe is said to appear in the film, according to insider Daniel Richtman, leading to much fan speculation.

The source gave very little information, claiming the Harry Potter actor had been cast in a ‘secret role’.

Given the 34-year-old is currently rocking a very ripped figure, which he unveiled in an episode of Miracle Workers, a superhero spin is not totally out of the realm of possibility.

However, Dan’s team did tell Metro.co.uk it was ‘not true I’m afraid’, when asked about the rumours.

While Hugh is donning the adamantium claws once again, it’s been suggested the new dad could play an alternative reality version of Wolverine or Logan.

Daniel is known for accepting surprising roles since leaving the magical wizarding world behind.

Deadpool 3 is thought to tackle the multiverse, especially given studio boss Kevin Feige confirmed the film is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ryan told Variety that this iteration of Wolverine is different to those we’ve seen before, especially given the ending of James Mangold’s Logan (2017).

While explaining how he convinced Hugh to return, Ryan said: ‘What we pitched him was enough of a divergence from the character that he knows and the character that he’s left behind, that it gives him something completely new to play and something that he’s really excited to do.’

Another more random casting rumour is the popular fan theory that Taylor Swift is appearing as Dazzler, a mutant with light powers activated by her voice.

With the Willow singer a close friend of Ryan and other cryptic hints deciphered by fans, it’s entirely possible but we’re not convinced.

One new face in the cast list is Emma Corrin, best known for their turn as Princess Diana in The Crown, who has previously shared how excited they are to join the cast.

Returning to a role she was first cast in 20 years ago, Jennifer Garner is bringing her daggers back as mercenary Elektra.

Also returning according to IMDb are Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapicic, Karan Soni, Leslie Uggams, and confusingly Rob Delaney.

Shawn Levy is set to direct Deadpool 3 and the film currently has a release date of May 3, 2024, despite production being halted.

Scream producer Kevin Williamson has shared his hopes that Neve Campbell can return to the slasher franchise, urging film bosses to ‘pay her the money’.

The Hollywood icon starred as ‘final girl’ Sidney Prescott in the 1996 original flick, and went on to reprise her role in the following four sequels.

However, ahead of the sixth instalment, which was released in cinemas in March, the 49-year-old announced that she would be bowing out due to a dispute over her salary.

Appearing on the Happy Horror Time podcast, Kevin – who wrote and produced many of the films – was questioned on her exit, and whether we could see her in the upcoming Scream 7.

‘I totally respect her opinion. I know exactly where she’s coming from, I know her well,’ he told hosts Tim Murdock and Matt Emert. ‘I love and adore her and that’s what she did. It’s right for her. I love everyone involved in Scream and all I can say is, pay her the money.

‘That’s what I would do, I would give her the money.

‘I’m sure there’s a number they can agree on that will make them both happy so hopefully one day they will figure that all out, and who knows. One day.’

During his appearance, he also unpacked his plans for Sidney in the latest sequel if Neve had returned, teasing that she would have finally had a happy ending.

Well, sort of…

‘Scream 6 would have been the love story of Sidney Prescott, and it would’ve been this whole thing of she’s falling in love, she’s going to get married, it’s all based around her marriage when these murders start happening again,’ Kevin continued.

‘It’s like, is this man that she’s in love with the killer again? Is she Billy Loomis-ing herself all over again? Is she still making the wrong decisions? Is she still choosing the bad guy?

‘Of course, the big result was [that] it wasn’t. He was there for real. She got her happy ending. I felt like that she had gone through so much, I was absolutely determined that Sidney Prescott had overcome all of it.’

We absolutely need a Scream wedding at some point.

Scream 6 trailer ghostface
Who will Ghostface terrorize next? (Picture: Paramount)

Kevin previously opened up about the future of the franchise, revealing that he believes that Ghostface can go on terrifying film fans forever.

Speaking to Collider, he said: ‘Now [I do think it can go on]. I’ve been proven wrong repeatedly.

‘Since this last one was such a pleasure… I also think one of the wonderful things about Scream is that there’s a different killer in every film.

‘There’s [Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, or Freddy Krueger], they don’t go away. And Ghostface changes with every movie, so we have an opportunity to change the motive, change the story, and we can always twist and turn it since it [the original Scream] was always meant to be a game-changer.’

Star Nia Vardalos takes on writing, acting and directing duties in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (Picture: Yannis Drakoulidis/Focus Features)

Over 20 years since surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding charmed the box office, the Portokalos family is back for another serving of ouza and opa in its third outing.

Writer Nia Vardalos leads the cast again as Toula – while sitting in the director’s chair for the first time – as the group heads to Greece for a family reunion, where they hope to honour her late father (Michael Constantine) by reuniting his childhood friends with his old journal.

It’s a paper-thin premise for a film but getting the clan out to the motherland is the way to keep this franchise fresh.

The family is fully immersed in their heritage for the first time, and in their element when surrounded by like-minded folk also ready to remind them of the Greek root for every word.

While Toula and American husband Ian (John Corbett) are happily settled, their daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) this time hides a secret – standard for this family – which her mother is desperately trying not to involve herself with, and there’s also ‘a nice Greek boy’ (also standard for this family) that her meddling aunts are trying to foist on her.

Matriarch Maria (Lainie Kazan) is home in Chicago, dealing with the early stages of dementia – a topic Vardalos is still able to sensitively mine for jokes – leaving it up to Toula and her brother Nick (Louis Mandylor) to organise the unwieldy Portokalos crew.

Once they arrive in Greece though, welcomed by the enthusiastic and self-appointed mayor of their father’s hometown (non-binary character Victory, played by Melina Kotselou), it quickly becomes clear that their glorious Greek reunion is under threat, with the mountainside village pretty much deserted save for one extremely grumpy elderly woman.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is ready to attempt tackling more timely issues with its subplot featuring Syrian immigrant Qamar (Stephanie Nur), but it struggles to do much of meaning with them.

Things are tied up far too quickly and simplistically – especially when it’s revealed there’s one more pretty large secret involving patriarch Gus from beyond the grave – but these films have always thrived more on the family dynamic depicted than anything else.

(L to R) Elena Kampouris as
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 attempts some weightier topics, but it’s all about the family’s explouts really (Picture: Yannis Drakoulidis/Focus Features)
(L to R) Nia Vardalos stars as
You can expect some gorgeous island scenery (Picture: Yannis Drakoulidis/Focus Features)

The sparkling dialogue and humorous set pieces do a lot of heavy lifting, from the absolute chaos of a plane full of American-Greeks heading to the homeland, naturally with a platter of souvlaki at hand, to vegetarian Ian having to come out to another unimpressed Greek cook.

Standout Andrea Martin retains her deadly precision with a zinger as Aunt Voula, while Mandylor steps into the spotlight as Nick tries to figure out his place in the family, all the while delighting his siblings by trimming his nose hair at the table.

Fan-favourite double act cousins Nikki and Angelo (Gia Carides and NSYNC’s Joey Fatone) also get their own side-quest that involves the bonus of more gorgeous Greek island scenery.

(L to R) Gia Carides as

Even at the third time of asking, Vardalos has lost none of her talent for bringing an authentic and heartfelt depiction of the Greek experience to the big screen, ably supported by a committed cast.

It might be more about the humour and the Portokalos family than what actually happens in the movie, and it certainly won’t change cinema – but hey, we’re not rebuilding the Parthenon here.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is out in cinemas on Friday, September 8.

The Nun II masters suspense but cliche pay-offs threaten to ruin a redeeming sequel https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/07/the-nun-2-review-suspense-driven-sequel-redeems-conjuring-spin-off-19464500/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/07/the-nun-2-review-suspense-driven-sequel-redeems-conjuring-spin-off-19464500/#respond Thu, 07 Sep 2023 16:00:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19464500
Taissa Farmiga in The Nun II
Taissa Farmiga returns as Sister Irene (Picture: 2022 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc)

Sequels are usually notoriously difficult to execute due to high expectations but The Nun II didn’t exactly have big shoes to fill.

After a tragically disappointing first installment with The Nun in 2018, the follow-up only had this to best and fortunately, it succeeds with a story that’s more considered and well-built suspense that harken back to that of the original Conjuring films.

The Nun II sees Taissa Farmiga reprise her role as Sister Irene four years after the events of the first film as she comes up against demonic force Valak, the Nun, at a boarding school in France. It also introduces Storm Reid as Sister Debra, a new addition to the cast who makes for a solid support system.

Like the first installment – one of the few things it got right – the sequel chooses its setting well with a chillingly dark palette using dimly-lit halls, cold chapels and desolate cobble-stoned streets to great effect. Director Michael Chaves goes to town using the space to set up his jump scares and it works perfectly – newspaper and magazine pages have never been so creepy and that’s all we’ll say about that.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of The Nun II is that it excels in building tension – looming shots of dark corners and the famous shadow of Valak manifesting in different objects and backgrounds much like she did in her first appearance in The Conjuring 2 are developed well.

However, the pay-off with many of the jump scares often feels slightly cheap thanks to blatant CGI and cliche delivery which lets down what started with promise – with that being said, the second half of the film is much stronger as the action begins to take centre stage mostly in one location, that being the creepy boarding school.

Taissa Farmiga in The Nun II
The Nun II features a strong supporting cast (Picture: Warner Bros.)

Can we get an Amen for those haunting settings? (Picture: Warner Bros.)

Farmiga, the younger sister of The Conjuring icon Vera Farmiga, still gives heart to the role of Sister Irene while the development of the supporting characters is solid overall – you genuinely root for the key players thanks to charming performances from Jonas Bloquet as Maurice and young Katelyn Rose Downey as Sophie.

Greater thought has been put into the backstory of Valak this time around and there’s material and room for theories to sink your teeth into, clearly setting up the foundation for another sequel.

When stacked up against other possession films of late – notably Talk To Me and Evil Dead Rise – The Nun II seems like a bit of a predictable snoozefest in comparison but, considered as a standalone, it’s an enjoyable watch.

There have been some highly questionable entries in The Conjuring universe with many of the spin-offs feeling like quick and easy money-grab releases off the back of the franchise’s popularity. However, The Nun II isn’t the worst of them and this spin-off series has been redeemed after a poor start.

The Nun II is no Annabelle: Creation, which was truly a fantastic sequel to the disenchanting Annabelle spin-off in 2014, but it is a much tighter improvement on its predecessor and nicely sets up what could be a nifty end if The Nun III completes the trilogy.

Ethan Hawke and his daughter, Stranger Things star Maya, have collaborated on their latest film together – which saw him direct his daughter in sex scenes.

However, the Oscar-nominated actor and writer, 52, insists that it wasn’t weird for them at all.

Maya, 25, takes on the lead role in their indie flick Wildcat, which tells the story of American writer Flannery O’Connor, who died in 1964 at the age of 39, while her dad sits in the director’s chair.

In Wildcat, O’Connor imagines acting out certain scenes from her novels and works, and that includes a quite literal role in the hay at one point.

Based on her short story Good Country People, Maya as O’Connor’s character plays a woman with a wooden leg who has sex with a Bible salesman, portrayed by Cooper Hoffman.

There’s also another sequence from O’Connor’s short story Parker’s Back, where she gets felt up in a pick up truck by a ‘ne’er do well’, with Rafael Casal in the cameo role.

But Strange Way of Life actor Ethan and Maya brush any suggestion of awkwardness when it comes to those sequences under the carpet.

‘We needed to take care of Rafael and Cooper. I think it was weird for them,’ the Dead Poet’s Society star admitted to Variety.

We were so comfortable with it. I couldn’t care less.’

Maya added: ‘We made sure to have an intimacy coordinator on set for them. So that they felt safe and comfortable and not like they were being spied on …’

‘… by some creepy dad,’ Ethan chimed in.

In Wild Cat, which the duo are free to promote during the actors’ strike due to having a Sag-Aftra agreement in place, Maya is also joined by Laura Linney as O’Connor’s mother Regina, as well as Philip Ettinger and Vincent D’Onofrio, Steve Zahn and Liam Neeson among the cameo parts.

Elsewhere in their interview, Ethan proudly shared that he was ‘a nepo dad’ after Maya invited him to direct her project, which she also produces, and said that it was ‘totally fair’ if someone wanted to criticise them for working together.

‘I had moments of insecurity about it while we were shooting the movie but the internet doesn’t have a lot of nuances,’ she stated.

‘My dad has been a massive teacher for me, and we want to work together. We like being with each other.’

Wildcat premiered on September 1 at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, and is set to screen again at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11.

Maya is the daughter of Ethan and Kill Bill star Uma Thurman, who were married after meeting on 1997 film Gattaca, and also share son Levon, 21, together.

They divorced in 2005, and Ethan shares two daughters with his second wife, Ryan, who he married in 2008.

Asteroid City star Maya also previously revealed that she lied to her famous father the night she lost her virginity.

‘I said I was going to therapy and I really went to lose my virginity,’ Maya revealed on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, when asked the worst trouble she got into with her famous parents.

She confirmed that her dad had been ‘very, very upset’.

‘He went, “Where were you? Where did you go?’ And I said, “How am I supposed to have secrets if I can’t tell lies?”’ she added.

Wildcat is yet to receive a UK release date.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget trailer unveils new voice cast after controversy and people aren’t happy https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/05/chicken-run-2-trailer-reveals-chilling-villain-return-mrs-tweedy-19450059/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/05/chicken-run-2-trailer-reveals-chilling-villain-return-mrs-tweedy-19450059/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2023 15:32:15 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19450059

Aardman and Netflix have finally dropped the first trailer for the highly anticipated Chicken Run sequel, and we are right back among our feathered friends Ginger, Rocky and company, 23 years later.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget picks back up with the brood after they escaped Tweedy’s Farm in daring fashion at the end of the last film.

Happy living their best free lives, all is at stake when the dangers of the human world suddenly come home to roost.

As the synopsis reads: ‘They’ll stop at nothing even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk to save chicken-kind.’

Ginger (newly and somewhat controversially voiced by Thandiwe Newton) tells her pals at the start of the trailer: ‘Last time we broke out of a chicken farm. Well this time, we’re breaking in!’

Back in 2020, Julia Sawalha – who originally voiced Ginger – said she was ‘devastated and furious’ after being dropped from the Chicken Run sequel because her voice is ‘too old’.

After the trailer’s release, some Chicken Run fans made it clear they took issue with Sawalha’s recasting as well.

One person complained that ‘Julia Sawalha’s recasting is cr*p,’ while another added: ‘I likely won’t watch it without some sort of justice for Julia.’

‘My excitement for this is immeasurable but it’s criminal that they didn’t bring back Julia Sawalha,’ mourned a separate fan.

‘I’m upset about this. I would love to watch the new film, but the way Julia Sawalha has been treated is so unfair,’ seethed someone else.

Back to the trailer: we catch glimpses of the chickens being flung over a concrete wall, shot out of a canon and snorkelling underwater (of course) in their mission, it’s a joy to see Babs, Bunty and Mac all present and correct with returning voice actors Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton and Lynn Ferguson.

Horrocks also offers a new line ready to match the mic drop of her iconic quote, ‘I don’t want to be a pie! I don’t like gravy’.

As Ginger advises them all that it’s ‘go time’, Babs explains: ‘It’s alright, I went before we left’.

Wheeler-dealer mice Nick and Fletcher are also back (with new tones courtesy of Romesh Ranganathan and Daniel Mays), gleefully warning the chickens of all the dangers that await them.

However, in a surprise turn of events, as the music turns foreboding we see Ginger peak up a staircase from her hiding spot while a scarily foreboding voice says: ‘Now you’ve had the appetiser, time for the main course.’

We hardly need Ginger’s fearful ‘it’s her!’ to recognise the return of Chicken Run’s chilling villain Mrs Tweedy, voiced by original actress Miranda Richardson.

Last seen being flattened by a barn door after surviving getting stuck in the safety valve of her own pie machine, which subsequently exploded, it’s safe to say she could have been presumed dead.

What do you think of the first glimpse of Chicken Run 2?Comment Now

That is clearly not the case though, as she makes her return in rather glamorous fashion, revealing a new hairstyle and style makeover that somehow makes her look even younger than she did back in 2003.

‘Welcome to the future,’ she threatens in her soft Northern tones, dastardly gleam in her eye as she surveys what appears to be her new, polished metal lair.

We can only assume she’s moved from chicken pie to chicken nugget…

Other additions to the cast include Zachary Levi replacing Mel Gibson as Rocky (not that much of him can be heard in the teaser), Harry Potter actor David Bradley replacing the late Benjamin Whitrow as Fowler, Nick Mohammed as Dr Fry and The Last of Us actor Bella Ramsey as Ginger and Rocky’s daughter Molly.

Peter Serafinowicz is also a newcomer to the coop as Reginald Smith, a humourless businessman who teams up with Mrs Tweedy, while Sam Fell has taken over on directorial duties from Peter Lord and Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park.

Chicken Run saw Aardman team up with DreamWorks for the two-time Bafta-nominated film, which remains the highest grossing stop-motion animated movie of all time, with an international box office gross of over $224million (£178m).

The sequel is set to premiere at the London Film Festival on October 14 ahead of a December release on Netflix.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Netflix for comment.
